Z Erasmus Darwin Biography Erasmus Darwin (December 12, 1731 - April 18, 1802) trained as a physician and wrote extensively on medicine and botany, as well as poetry. Living in Birmingham and Lichfield, England. He was one of the founder members of the Lunar Society. He was a member of the Darwin-Wedgwood family, most famously including his grandson, Charles Darwin.
He was born near at Elston Hall near Nottingham. he was educated at Chesterfield School then later at St. John's College, Cambridge. He obtained his degree at Edinburgh Medical School. He settled in 1756 as a physician at Nottingham, but meeting with little success he moved in the following year to Lichfield. He practised medicine in Lichfield in Staffordshire for twenty years; George III invited him to be royal physician but he declined. In 1781 he moved to Derby, where he died suddenly on the 18th of April 1802.
Zoonomia is widely considered to foreshadow the pre-Darwinian theories of Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, and maybe even the theory of evolution formulated by his grandson Charles Darwin. Another of his grandsons was Francis Galton.
His experiments in galvanism inspired Mary Shelley to write Frankenstein. His poetry was admired by Coleridge and Wordsworth; and often made reference to his interests in science, for example botany and steam engines. His most famous work of poetry was The Botanic Garden.

Summary:
From the PREFACE: The purport of the following pages is an endeavour to reduce the facts belonging to ANIMAL LIFE into classes, orders, genera, and species; and, by comparing them with each other, to unravel the theory of diseases. It happened, perhaps unfortunately for the inquirers into the knowledge of diseases, that other sciences had received improvement previous to their own; whence, instead of comparing the properties belonging to animated nature with each other, they, idly ingenious, busied themselves in attempting to explain the laws of life by those of mechanism and chemistry; they considered the body as an hydraulic machine, and the fluids as passing through a series of chemical changes, forgetting that animation was its essential characteristic. The great CREATOR of all things has infinitely diversified the works of his hands, but has at the same time stamped a certain similitude on the features of nature, that demonstrates to us, that

Darwin, Erasmus Darwin, Erasmus (1731-1802), British doctor, inventor, and poet, born at Elston Hall near Nottingham. He attended St John’s College, Cambridge, graduating with a bachelor of medicine degree in 1755. His medical education also included William Hunter’s anatomy lectures in London and two years (1754-1755) at the Edinburgh Medical School. Darwin began his medical career in Nottingham before moving to Lichfield, in Staffordshire, in 1756. Here an early success with a supposedly incurable patient helped establish his reputation. Darwin employed the usual therapeutics of 18th-century medicine, but he was a careful and diligent doctor whose advice included fresh air, exercise, and attention to diet. His bedside manner was apparently unhindered by his stutter. Darwin’s wealth increased as his practice expanded, but it was arduous work. Long, rough, journeys in poor weather stimulated an interest in improving the suspension and steering mechanisms of coaches, designs for which appeared in his “Commonplace Book”, a diary and notebook where he recorded other examples of his inventiveness, interesting medical cases, and his own sufferings from gout. Some of Darwin’s ideas remained sketches on paper. Others, such as his speaking machine and copying machine, he realized. Darwin was a founder member in Birmingham of the Lunar Society (1766), so named because its members would try to meet with each other to discuss natural philosophy (science) when a full moon helped travel. Besides Darwin, several members of the Lunar Society, Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, and Joseph Priestley, were key figures in the Industrial Revolution and English Enlightenment.

Development of Evolutionary Thought
Evolution and Religion Development of Evolutionary Thought Teaching evolution Teaching evolution can be fraught with difficulty: it is probably the only scientific theory to be rejected on grounds of personal belief. Because of this, it may be that we should move from simply teaching a series of facts and concepts to looking at the development of the theory of evolution, and placing it in its social and historical contexts. William Cobern, who has written a number of papers on the teaching of evolution, has commented (1994) "Teaching evolution at the secondary level - is very much like Darwin presenting the Origin of Species to a public who historically held a very different view of origins." To meet this challenge, "teachers [should] preface the conceptual study of evolution with a classroom dialogue ... informed with material on the cultural history of Darwinism." He goes on (1995, p. 295), "I do not believe ... that evolution can be taught effectively by ignoring significant metaphysical (i.e. essentially religious) questions. One addresses these issues not by teaching a doctrine, but by looking back historically to the cultural and intellectual milieu of Darwin's day and the great questions over which people struggled."
