THOUGHTS ON MODERN LITERATURE
By Ralph Waldo Emerson
secondary . On the other hand, the Prophets do not imply the existence of Shakspeare or Homer,—advert to no books or arts, only to dread ideas and emotions. People imagine that the place, which the Bible holds in the world, it owes to miracles. It owes it simply to the fact that it came out of a profounder depth of thought than any other book, and the effect must be precisely proportionate. Gibbon fancied that it was combinations of circumstances that gave Christianity its place in history. But in nature it takes an ounce to balance an ounce.
In looking at the library of the Present Age we are first struck with the fact of the immense miscellany. It can hardly be characterized by any species of book, for every opinion old and new, every hope and fear, every whim and folly has an organ. It prints a vast carcass of tradition every year, with as much solemnity as a new revelation. Along with these it vents books that breathe of new morning, that seem to heave with the life of millions, books for which men and women peak and pine; books which take the rose out of the cheek of him that wrote them, and give him to the midnight a sad, solitary, diseased man; which leave no man where they found him, but make him better or worse; and which work dubiously on society, and seem to inoculate it with a venom before any healthy result appears.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) American lecturer, poet, and essayist The bitterest tragic element in life to be derived from an intellectual source is the belief in a brute Fate or Destiny. RALPH WALDO EMERSON, Natural History of Intellect Every reform was once a private opinion. RALPH WALDO EMERSON, Essays I am not engaged to Christianity by decent forms, or saving ordinances; it is not usage, it is not what I do not understand, that binds me to it let these be the sandy foundations of falsehoods. What I revere and obey in it is its reality, its boundless charity, its deep interior life, the rest it gives to my mind, the echo it returns to my thoughts, the perfect accord it makes with my reason through all its representation of God and His Providence; and the persuasion and courage that come out thence to lead me upward and onward. RALPH WALDO EMERSON, sermon, Sept. 9, 1832 A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Life
Emerson was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a Unitarian minister and would later become a Unitarian minister himself. Emerson eventually, however, broke away from the doctrine of his superiors and formulated and expressed the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his 1836 essay Nature.
In 1810, when Emerson was eight years old, his father died. His father complained that Emerson couldn't read well enough when he was 3 years old. In October of 1817, at the age of 14, Emerson went to Harvard University and was appointed President's Freshman, a position which gave him a room free of charge. He waited at Commons, which reduced the cost of his board to one quarter, and he received a scholarship. He added to his slender means by tutoring and by teaching during the winter vacations at his Uncle Ripley's school in Waltham, Massachusetts.
After Emerson graduated from Harvard, he assisted his brother in a school for young ladies established in their mother's house; when his brother went to Göttingen to study divinity, Emerson took charge of the school. Over the next several years, Emerson made his living as a schoolmaster, eventually studying divinity himself, and emerging as a Unitaritan minister. A dispute with church officials over the administration of the Communion service led to his resignation. About the same time, his young wife and one true love, Miss Elena Louisa Tucker, died in February of 1831.

In 1825 he entered Harvard Divinity School and in 1826 was “approbated to preach” by the Middlesex Association of Ministers. Despite ill health, he delivered occasional sermons in churches of the Boston area. In 1829 he became minister of the Second Church (Unitarian) of Boston. In that same year he married Ellen Tucker, who died 17 months later. In 1832 Emerson resigned from his pastoral appointment after declaring that he had ceased to regard the Lord's Supper as a permanent sacrament and could not continue to administer it. On Christmas Day, 1832, he left the United States for a tour of Europe and stayed for some time in England, where he made the acquaintance of such literary notables as

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson was born in Boston, the son of a minister. After studying at Harvard he was himself ordained as a minister of the First Unitarian Church in 1829 but resigned three years later, finding its dogma too restrictive. Following the death of his first wife, he travelled to Europe, where he met Coleridge Wordsworth , and Carlyle. On his return to America he lectured on a broad range of academic subjects and in 1835 remarried and moved to Concord, Massachusetts. In 1836 he published his first work, an essay entitled Nature , in which he expounded his philosophy of transcendentalism, whose fundamental tenet was that a person's own spiritual experience was more important than orthodox religion. He became editor of the movement's quarterly publication, The Dial , in which his first poems, The Problem Wood-Notes The Sphinx , and Fate appeared. His first collection of verse, Poems , was published in 1847, after which he again visited England on a lecture tour. He was also a committed abolitionist. He was made a Doctor of Law by Harvard in 1866, the university previously having banned him in 1838 because of his unorthodox religious views. In addition to his poetry, Emerson wrote several prose works including

Emerson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ralph Waldo (1803-1882), American essayist and poet, who was the first distinctively American author to influence European thought. On his return in 1833, Emerson settled in Concord, Massachusetts, and became active as a lecturer in Boston. His addresses, on such subjects as “The Philosophy of History”, “Human Culture”, “Human Life”, and “The Present Age”, were based on material in his Journals (published posthumously, 1909-1914), a collection of observations and notes that he had begun while a student at Harvard. His most detailed statement of belief was reserved for his first published book, Nature (1836), which appeared anonymously, but was soon correctly attributed to him. The volume received little notice, but it has come to be regarded as Emerson's most original and significant work, offering the essence of his philosophy of transcendentalism. This idealist doctrine opposed the popular materialist and Calvinist views of life and at the same time voiced a plea for freedom of the individual from artificial restraints.
