A beneficent person is like a fountain watering the earth, and spreading fertility; it is, therefore, more delightful and more honorable to give than to receive.
Benevolence

A free life cannot acquire many possessions, because this is not easy to do without servility to mobs or monarchs.
Freedom
A strict belief in fate is the worst of slavery, imposing upon our necks an everlasting lord and tyrant, whom we are to stand in awe of night and day. Fate All other love is extinguished by self-love; beneficence, humanity, justice, philosophy, sink under it. Self-love Death is nothing to us, since when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not. Death Freedom is the greatest fruit of self-sufficiency. Freedom Let no one delay the study of philosophy while young nor weary of it when old. Philosophy Nothing is enough for the man to whom enough is too little.

http://www.crystalinks.com/epicurus.html
Epicurus (341 BCE, Samos 270 BCE, Athens) was an ancient Greek philosopher and the founder of Epicureanism, a popular school of thought in Hellenistic Philosophy that spanned about 600 years. Of his over 300 written works only a few fragments and letters survive; much of what we know about Epicureanism comes from later followers or commentators. Epicurus was born into an Athenian emigre family - his parents, Neocles and Chaerestrate, both Athenian citizens, were sent to an Athenian settlement on the Aegean island of Samos. According to Apollodorus (reported by Diogenes Laertius at X.14-15), he was born on the seventh day of the month Gamelion in the third year of the 109th Olympiad, in the archonship of Sosigenes (about February 341 BC). He returned to Athens at the age of eighteen to serve in military training. The playwright Menander served in the same age-class of the ephebes as Epicurus. He joined his father in Colophon after the Athenian settlers at Samos were expelled by Perdiccas due to their revolt after Alexander the Great died (c. 320 BC). He spent the next several years in Colophon, Lampsacus, and Mytilene, where he founded his school at the age of 32 and gathered many disciples. In the archonship of Anaxicrates (307-306 BC), he returned to Athens where he formed his school known as The Garden, named for the garden he owned about halfway between the Stoa and the Academy that served as the school's meetingplace. Epicurus died in the second year of the 127th Olympiad, in the archonship of Pytharatus, at the age of 72. He reportedly suffered from a renal calculus, and despite the prolonged pain involved, he is reported as saying in a letter to Idomeneus:

Epicurus was born on the Greek island of Samos and trained in the military in Athens before becoming a teacher in Mytilene and Lampsacus. He returned to Athens in 305 BC where he founded a school of philosophy that bears his name. Epicurus revived physical atomism, a theory that the world was formed by the concourse of atoms, first devised by Leucippus (c5th BC) and Democritus (c. 460-c. 362 BC). Although most of his writings are lost, his work is known through fragments of writings by Diogenes Laërtius and particularly through the long poem

" No pleasure is a bad thing in itself " INTRODUCTION to Epicurus's Sovran Maxims
Epicurus was born in 341BC on the island of Samos. He studied philosophy under the successors of Democritus and Plato, and eventually founded his own school and community at the 'garden' in Athens. Epicureanism, a philosophy of refined and calculating pleasure-seeking (in contrast to the rival creed of Stoicism with its watchword of 'duty'), flourished for centuries, spawning colonies and followers throughout Europe, only to fade with the coming of Christianity. THE VERY SQUASHED VERSION
Death is nothing to us; for that which has no sensation is nothing to us.
The magnitude of pleasure reaches its limit in the removal of all pain.
It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and honorably and justly, and it is impossible to live wisely and honorably and justly without living pleasantly.
No pleasure is a bad thing in itself, but the things which produce certain pleasures entail disturbances many times greater than the pleasures themselves.

These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro An engraving of a marble bust of Epicurus excavated from Herculaneum Epicurus Greek ancient Greek philosopher and the founder of Epicureanism , one of the several schools of philosophy from the Hellenistic period . He was a prolific author , though very few of his works have survived to the modern day and all but a few fragments have come from excerpts in other, later authors. During his life his school had a sizable following at The Garden, an estate he purchased in Athens halfway between the Stoa and the Academy His philosophy was characterized by a focus on attaining (ataraxia, calmness or a lack of anxiety). To reach this state, he exhorted his followers to not fear the gods or death and to remember that what is good is easy to get and what is bad is easy to endure. Epicurus strengthened his ethical arguments by relying on his materialist atomist physics , following in the footsteps of the early atomists Democritus and Leucippus . Relying on consequences of this physics he developed an epistemology he called the (canon, ruler or measure), as it provides a method for measuring the validity of a sense perception.

Epicurus (341 - 270 B.C.) The Greek philosopher from whom our word epicurean derives was born in Samos as the son of an Athenian colonist. He claimed to have been self-taught, although tradition assures us that he went to Athens at the age of nineteen and was schooled at the Academy in the systems of Plato and Democritus Epicurus preferred the philosophy of Democritus to that of Plato or Aristotle, and he appropriated much of the atomistic theory of Democritus into his own philosophy. From the Cyrenaic hedonist Aristippus , he learned the wisdom of pleasure, and from Pyrrho he took the doctrine of tranquillity ( ataraxia When his contemporary, Theodorus of Cyrene , was indicted for impiety by the Athenian Assembly, for openly preaching an unmoralistic atheism in Athens , Epicurus took note, and resolved to soften his own attacks on Religion. After sojourning in Athens he returned to Asia and lectured on philosophy at Colophon , Mytilene, and Lampascus. The residents of Lampascus were so impressed with him that they raised a fund and bought Epicurus a house and garden on the outskirts of Athens , and presented it to him as both his school and his home.

Then as Now
Three hundred years before there were any Christians, the philosopher Epicurus founded (306 BCE His outlook spread throughout the Roman world, but after many centuries of influence it was eventually smothered by the dominance of Christianity. There is now renewed interest in it.
The Teachings of Epicurus
Today there is widespread confusion about moral values. Moral philosophy is not taught systematically in schools or colleges. Some people even say that you cannot have morality without religion. The Study of Science
  • There are two kinds of enquiry, the one concerned with things, the other with nothing but words. In a joint philosophical debate, he who is defeated gains in so far as he has learned something new.
Happiness
  • It is not drinking bouts and continuous partying and sexual indulgence, or consuming fish and the other dainties of an extravagant table, which produce the pleasant life, but sober calculation which searches out the reasons for everything to be chosen or avoided and banishes those beliefs which are the cause of the greatest agony of the mind. We must laugh and philosophise and manage our households and look after our other affairs all at the same time, and never stop proclaiming the words of the true philosophy.

Epicurus of Sámos (341-270 BCE)
Epicurus (342-270 BCE) was born in Samos and is believed to have become a teacher in Colophon. He perhaps gained an interest in philosophy by reading Democritus. He subsequently formulated a philosophy of his own that extended the atomic theory of Democritus and his concept of cheerfulness. Epicurus probably started making his ideas public on the island of Lesbos in about 311 BCE. A few years later he returned to Athens, where he remained for the rest of his life, becoming famous for putting forward a broad-based philosophy linking the life of man and the physical world in a single atomic theory. He put forward his teachings in his garden outside of the city and became the venerated head of a unique society of men and women. When Epicurus died he left his hou se and garden in trust for the use of this society.

Posted in The way we live now at 7:14 am by Robert Hanrott At a performance of " Rigoletto" last night the opera was reaching its climax. Gilda was wrapped, dying, in her death sack and Rigoletto was about to rip the sack open to discover her, mortally wounded. At this crucial moment, when the rest of the audience was holding its breath, gripped by the tragedy, my next door neighbour took out her Blackberry, turned it on and checked her emails. And they say the world turns as usual and that my premonition of decline and decay are the usual mutterings of a grumpy old man, complaining as is usual about the younger generation! Epicurus and the peddling of fear

To debate the real issues the country faces is one thing; to blatantly peddle fear to the half-informed is a disgrace, coming as it does from a man who tells us he is so experienced in foreign affairs.
