Olaudah Equiano
'Olaudah Equiano 'Olaudah Equiano c 31 March ), also sometimes called 'Gustavus Vassa ', was an eighteenth century Africa n writer who lived in Britain and its American colonies . He claimed to be born in an unlocated village called Essaka, in what is now the Igbo -speaking region of Nigeria . At the age of eleven, he was taken as a slave to the New World and sold first to a captain in the Royal Navy , who gave him the name of Gustavus Vassa. Later, he was sold to Robert King, a Quaker (member of the Religious Society of Friends ) merchant in Philadelphia . King taught him to read and write, and educated him in the Christian faith. Equiano bought his freedom by careful trading and saving and became a seaman, travelling widely over the world. In London , he became involved in the abolitionist movement , which led to him writing and publishing The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa the African ), a book that not only furthered the abolitionist cause, but also made Equiano's fortune. It is one of the earliest known examples of published writing by a black African writer. Its first hand account of slavery (from the slave's perspective) and of the experiences of an Eighteenth Century black immigrant in Britain are very rare.

Elizabeth Taylor (the other one) June 29th, 2007 under The Enthusiast BOOKS Comments : none I just finished The Wedding Group, which I found in the bookcase in Venice, CA (thank you, Janet for having so many good books I have never read), and it was such an amazing portrait of a mother and her grown son, a sensitive but brilliantly controlling, independent but quietly needy, utterly indulgent mother. Hmm. A blueprint for Cathy?
I have no idea what this cover art has to do with the book.
It really is a beautiful, surprising, emotionally discerning book. I had read Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont ( a wonderful editor gave it to me years ago), and now I will have to read it again. And all her other books! Lucky me!

So now we're to believe that Bush holds Clinton or the Clinton Era with any respect whatsoever.
From Crocodile tears over the loss of life in Afghanistan and Iraq to the "glowing praise" for the very man on whom he has spent the past 3 years blaming his own administrations roster of failures, the lack of integrity is glaring! Infinite 14-06-2004, 07:36 PM Didn't Bush just carry on with a lot of Clinton's policies? Having no respect for the Clinton era would be a bit daft then. Whowhere 15-06-2004, 09:46 AM He's a wanker. Aladdin 15-06-2004, 09:52 AM I'd much rather have an adulterer than a murdering, deranged, corrupt war criminal religious fundamentalist scumbag as head of government.
Quite why a single person in America would think different really beggars belief. Perhaps our sadly-departed Thanatos, one to despise Clinton while at the same time admiring the spineless chimp, would care to do a quick come back and explain... Indrid Cold 15-06-2004, 11:33 AM
