Proposition 20
Prime numbers are more than any assigned multitude of prime numbers. Let A, B, and C be the assigned prime numbers. I say that there are more prime numbers than A, B, and C. Take the least number DE measured by A, B, and C. Add the unit DF to DE. Then EF is either prime or not. First, let it be prime. Then the prime numbers A, B, C, and EF have been found which are more than A, B, and C. Next, let EF not be prime. Therefore it is measured by some prime number. Let it be measured by the prime number G. VII.31 I say that G is not the same with any of the numbers A, B, and C. If possible, let it be so. Now A, B, and C measure DE, therefore G also measures DE. But it also measures EF. Therefore G, being a number, measures the remainder, the unit DF, which is absurd. Therefore G is not the same with any one of the numbers A, B, and C. And by hypothesis it is prime. Therefore the prime numbers A, B, C, and G have been found which are more than the assigned multitude of A, B, and C. Therefore, prime numbers are more than any assigned multitude of prime numbers. Q.E.D.

Euclid's Elements of Geometry
Euclid's Elements is by far the most famous mathematical work of classical antiquity, and also has the distinction of being the world's oldest continuously used mathematical textbook. Little is known about the author, beyond the fact that he lived in Alexandria around 300 BCE. The main subjects of the work are geometry, proportion, and number theory.
Most of the theorems appearing in the Elements were not discovered by Euclid himself, but were the work of earlier Greek mathematicians such as Pythagoras (and his school), Hippocrates of Chios, Theaetetus of Athens, and Eudoxus of Cnidos. However, Euclid is generally credited with arranging these theorems in a logical manner, so as to demonstrate (admittedly, not always with the rigour demanded by modern mathematics) that they necessarily follow from five simple axioms. Euclid is also credited with devising a number of particularly ingenious proofs of previously discovered theorems: e.g. , Theorem 48 in Book 1.
The geometrical constructions employed in the Elements are restricted to those which can be achieved using a straight-rule and a compass. Furthermore, empirical proofs by means of measurement are strictly forbidden:

What is EUCLID?
EUCLID is an interactive identification and information system for eucalypts, using Lucid software. It was produced by the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research from the Australian National Herbarium database of over 60,000 eucalypt specimens as well as information derived from glasshouse studies for details of comparative juvenile morphology, and from widespread field observations. It was first published in 1997, with a revised edition published in 2000 which includes all the species of Angophora. EUCLID Second Edition published in 2002, covers all southern Australian eucalypts.Eucalypts have been difficult to identify in the past but now with EUCLID and a minimum of plant material and/or instructive illustrations, the task has been made simple. top

Identification
Identifications are achieved by matching features of the specimen with features from any of the 113 different characters available in the key. The characters are arranged into sets and these sets contain information about the natural distribution, habit, bark, flower buds, fruits, seeds, juvenile leaves, and habitat. Characters can be selected in any order. The great advantage over traditional identification keys is that EUCLID gives the freedom to avoid characters that are unavailable or difficult to assess. To enhance the word descriptions, each

Next: About this document
EUCLID Euclid is known to almost every high school student as the author of The Elements , the long studied text on geometry and number theory. No other book except the Bible has been so widely translated and circulated. From the time it was written it was regarded as an extraordinary work and was studied by all mathematicians, even the greatest mathematician of antiquity Archimedes, and so it has been through the 23 centuries that have followed. It is unquestionably the best mathematics text ever written and is likely to remain so into the distant future. Euclid Little is known about Euclid , fl. 300BC, the author of The Elements . He taught and wrote at the Museum and Library at Alexandria, which was founded by Ptolemy I. Almost everything about him comes from Proclus' Commentary , 4th cent AD. He writes that Euclid collected Eudoxus' theorems, perfected many of Theaetetus', and completed fragmentary works left by others. Euclid is said to have said to the first Ptolemy who inquired if there was a shorter way to learn geometry than the Elements: ...there is no royal road to geometry

Euclid's Fourteenth Book
Ivars Peterson When a famous mathematician has something new to say, the whole world pays attention. Euclid's Elements , which presented the state of the art in geometry around 300 B.C. , has been extraordinarily influential. This massive, 13-volume compendium set the standard for mathematical exposition and precise discourse for many centuries. More than 2,000 editions have been published, and new, interactive versions now appear on the World Wide Web. What's more, there is compelling evidence that Euclid of Alexandria ( c B.C. ) had a fourteenth book in mind. Officials of the Avril Foundation for Old Occidental Languages have announced that, after a year devoted to authentication and analysis, they are prepared to release the text of a manuscript that appears to be a Latin translation of research notes jotted down by Euclid in preparation for writing a fourteenth volume of Elements "This is truly an astonishing document," says Duncan D. Umber of St. Patrick's College of Medieval Studies, who recently examined the manuscript. "Euclid went much farther in his investigations than anyone had previously suspected. People continually underestimate what the ancients were able to do. We will need to reassess Greek mathematics in its entirety."

Euclid
(325-265 BC)
It is often claimed that, after the Bible, Euclid's comprehensive treatise Elements is the most printed and studied work in the history of the western world. However, very little is known about the personal life of the author and most of what is inferred derives from a brief summary by Proclus, written in the fifth century. According to Proclus, Euclid taught mathematics at Alexandria, Egypt in the time of Ptolemy I Soter, who reigned from 323 to 285 BC. Thus, though the exact timeframe of Euclid's life is uncertain, modern scholars generally believe that he flourished around 300 BC. Two short anecdotes comprise the bulk of modern day knowledge regarding Euclid's character. One was related by Proclus and states that when Euclid was teaching Ptolemy, the young Egyptian King, he was asked by the pupil whether or not there was a shorter road to the mastery of geometry than through Elements . Euclid is said to have replied, "there is no royal road to geometry" . The second story also reflects upon Euclid as a teacher. Reportedly, when another student inquired about what he would get for learning a new concept in geometry, Euclid ordered his assistant to bestow a coin upon him

T here are no known records of the exact date or place of Euclid's birth, and little is known about his personal life. We do know that during the reign of Ptolemy I he taught mathematics in Alexandria, Egypt, at the Alexandria library or "Museum", and that he wrote the most enduring mathematical work of all time, the Stoicheia or Elements , a thirteen volume work. This comprehensive compilation of geometrical knowledge, based on the works of Thales, Pythagoras, Plato, Eudoxus, Aristotle, Menaechmus and others, was in common usage for over 2,000 years. An Arabian author, al-Qifti (d. 1248), recorded that Euclid's father was Naucrates and his grandfather was Zenarchus, that he was a Greek, born in Tyre and lived in Damascus. But there is no real proof that this is the same Euclid. In fact, another man, Euclid of Megara, a philosopher who lived at the time of Plato, is often confused with Euclid of Alexandria. Euclid is often referred to as the "Father of Geometry." It is probable that he attended Plato's Academy in Athens, received his mathematical training from students of Plato, and then came to Alexandria. Alexandria was then the largest city in the western world, and the center of both the papyrus industry and the book trade. Ptolemy had created the great library at Alexandria, which was known as the Museum, because it was considered a house of the muses for the arts and sciences. Many scholars worked and taught there, and that is where Euclid wrote
