Faulkner, William Faulkner, William (1897-1962), one of the greatest American novelists, known for his epic portrayal, in some 20 novels, of the tragic conflict between the old and the new South. Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, September 25, 1897, and was raised in nearby Oxford as the oldest of four sons of an old-line southern family. He dropped out of high school, which he detested, to work in his grandfather's bank in 1915. In World War I he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, but never saw action. Back home in Oxford, he was admitted to the University of Mississippi as a veteran, but soon left to write, supporting himself with odd jobs. Faulkner's first book

Parenthetical Citation The List of Works Cited In addition to indicating which facts, ideas, or words derive from someone else, always let your readers know where each can be found. You want to enable readers not only to "check up" on you, but also to follow in your footsteps and build on your work. After all, you hope that your analysis of a text will entice readers to reread certain passages from a different point of view. "I know not ‘seems,’ " Hamlet claims in line 76 of Act 1, Scene 2 , and (2) On the fourth page of her 1993 PMLA article (which was that journal’s 108th volume), Jean Wyatt insists that Morrison’s "plot . . . cannot move forward because Sethe’s space is crammed with the past." In this system, parenthetical citations embedded in an essay are keyed to an alphabetized list of works cited that appears at its end. Parenthetical citations allow the writer to briefly indicate where an idea, fact, or quotation appears, while the list of works cited gives readers all the information they need to find that source. Here is a typical sentence with parenthetical citation, as well as the works cited entry to which it refers. Sample Parenthetical Citation In one critic’s view, "Ode on a Grecian Urn" explores "what great art means" not to the ordinary person, but only "to those who create it" (Bowra 148).

THE RUE MORTUARY RUE MORGUE MESSAGE BOARD CINEMACABRE / DREADLINES PDA View Full Version : William Faulkner's 'Nosferatu' FEEDBACK 11-19-2006, 06:21 PM From the LA Times website....
Who's ready for William Faulkner's 'Nosferatu'?
A long-lost script for a vampire film, discovered several years ago, now appears headed for the big screen.
By Jay A. Fernandez, Special to The Times
November 15, 2006
You've heard of Southern Gothic? Well, how does "William Faulkner's Nosferatu" grab ya?
As the exclusive representative of the William Faulkner Literary Estate, producer Lee Caplin ("Ali") has had access to the vaunted Mississippi writer's letters, sketches, notes and other literary works for years. So when Jill Faulkner Summers, the novelist's daughter, found a manuscript seven years ago in the piles of material her father left behind when he died in 1962, she passed it on to Caplin. He was stunned by what she'd found: Faulkner's only un-produced, feature-length screenplay.
But here's the kicker: Faulkner, the Pulitzer and Nobel prize-winning writer of "As I Lay Dying," "Light in August," and "Absalom! Absalom!," had harvested his astonishing talent to write ... a vampire film.
Faulkner had a legendarily complicated relationship with Hollywood, which he initially attempted to exploit for easy money before becoming so annoyed that he ultimately retreated to Mississippi. His distaste was well-earned: His first produced screenplay involved being asked by Irving Thalberg to transform his all-male World War I movie "Turn About" into a Joan Crawford vehicle called "Today We Live." (For a humorous snapshot of Faulkner's Hollywood years, see John Mahoney's wickedly playful homage as W.P. Mayhew, the Southern novelist turned agonized and alcohol-benumbed screenwriter in the Coen Brothers' "Barton Fink.")

Biography
William Faulkner wrote works of psychological drama and emotional depth, typically with long serpentine prose and high, meticulously-chosen diction. Like most prolific authors, he suffered the envy and scorn of others, and was considered to be the stylistic rival to Ernest Hemingway (his long sentences and ornate verbiage contrasted to Hemingway's short, 'minimalist' style). He is perhaps also considered to be the only true American Modernist prose fiction writer of the , following in experimental tradition European writers such as James Joyce Virginia Woolf , and Marcel Proust , and known for using groundbreaking literary devices such as stream of consciousness , multiple narrations or points of view, and time-shifts within narrative.

Faulkner developed an interest poetry when he was in his late teens. In 1916, he worked as a clerk in his grandfather's bank and wrote poetry. He was also frequently found on the campus of the University of Mississippi. Two years later, Faulkner was denied enlistment into the United States Army, after which he accepted a position as a ledger clerk for the Winchester Repeating Arms Co.
