from Miette's Bedtime Story Podcast on November 18, 2005
30 views Okay, someone was a little smartasinine requesting this one, for reasons that most of you will never know, given that this is not one of those soundbiting autobiographic shows and hence most of you don t know that my real name is, in fact, Jemima, and I, too, paid my way through school with whiskey. Curious, that. Even though it was a bit of an elbow-ribbing, request-speaking, this one picked up my mood considerably. I couldn t read it without cracking once or thrice if you can do better while listening, let me know and the next request is yours. If you can t, don t let me know, just listen to this as proof that Fitzgerald will always be funnier than you, crackups and all. also in: education arts literature scott ...

Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Fitzgerald is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th Century. The self-styled spokesman of the "Lost Generation" the Americans born in the 1890s who came of age during World War I crafted five novels and dozens of short stories that treat themes of youth, despair, and age with remarkable emotional honesty. His heroes handsome, confident, and doomed blaze brilliantly before exploding ("Show me a hero," he once said, "and I will write you a tragedy"), and his heroines are beautiful and intricate.
    Early years
He was named for his relative Francis Scott Key, but commonly known as simply Scott. Scott Fitzgerald attended Saint Paul Academy and Summit School in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1908-1911. He then attended Newman School, a prep school in Hackensack, New Jersey, in 1911-12. He entered Princeton University in 1913 as a member of the Class of 1917 and became friends with the future critics and writers Edmund Wilson '16 and John Peale Bishop '17. Saddled with academic difficulties throughout his three-year career at the university, Fitzgerald dropped out in 1917 to enlist in the United States Army when America entered World War I. However, the war ended quickly thereafter, and he was discharged without having been shipped to Europe.

    Fitzgerald, F. Scott
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald's most famous novel, The Great Gatsby, is considered one of the great pieces of American literature. Named after his distant cousin, the author of the Spar Spangled Banner, F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896, to Edward and Mollie. As a child, Fitzgerald's father took the family from Minnesota to Buffalo, New York, and back to St. Paul as he pursued failed careers. Fitzgerald attended high school at the Newman School in New Jersey, and entered college at Princeton. In college he wrote musicals, humor pieces, and short stories for school publications and groups. Fitzgerald left school in 1917 for the Army where he wrote his first novel, The Romantic Egoist . It was rejected by Charles Scribner for publication, yet praised for its originality. Stationed at Camp Sheridan, near Montgomery, Alabama, F. Scott Fitzgerald fell in love with Zelda Sayre, a judge's daughter. He re-submitted Egoist, was rejected again, and traveled with Zelda to New York to seek his fortune. Unwilling to wait for his success, Zelda broke their engagement. Fitzgerald, determined to become an author, quit his position in 1919 and returned to St. Paul to work on his writing. In St. Paul he began to be published steadily as a short story writer, and a collection of his stories made it to print:

SCOTT FITZGERALD, This Side of Paradise The years between thirty-five and sixty-five revolve before the passive mind as one unexplained, confusing merry-go-round. True, they are a merry-go-round of ill-gaited and wind-broken horses, painted first in pastel colors, then in dull grays and browns, but perplexing and intolerably dizzy the thing is, as never were the merry-go-rounds of childhood or adolescence; as never, surely, were the certain-coursed, dynamic roller-coasters of youth. For most men and women these thirty years are taken up with a gradual withdrawal from life. F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, "O Russet Witch!" F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, letter, Jul. 29, 1940

    Summary:
The Beautiful and Damned is the story of Anthony Patch and his wife, Gloria. Harvard-educated and an aspiring aesthete, Patch is waiting for his inheritance upon his grandfather's death. His reckless marriage to Gloria is fueled by alcohol and is destroyed by greed. The Patches race through a series of alcohol-induced fiascoes first in hilarity, and then in despair. The Beautiful and Damned, a devastating portrait of the nouveaux riches, New York night life, reckless ambition, and squandered talent, was published in 1922 on the heels of Fitzgerald's first novel. It signaled his maturity as a storyteller and, more important, as a novelist.

    Fitzgerald, F. Scott
One of the great American novelists, F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in a squalid one–room apartment at 200 Claremont Street (near Columbia University) and worked for an advertising agency before he became successful as a writer. He had a remarkable ability to describe the city in glowing terms: “New York had all the iridescence of the beginning of the world,” he explains in his essay The Crack–Up , “…this was the greatest nation and there was gala in the air.” His great novels, including This Side of Paradise The Beautiful and the Damned (1922), and The Great Gatsby (1925), articulated the passions of the Jazz Age and reflect Fitzgerald’s ambiguous relationship with his own success.
