Send it to a friend! Elizabeth Gaskell (1810 - 1865) Elizabeth Stevenson was born in London on 29 September 1810, the daughter of a Unitarian minister. After her mother's early death, she was raised by an aunt who lived in Knutsford in Cheshire. In 1832 she married William Gaskell, also a Unitarian minister, and they settled in the industrial city of Manchester. Motherhood and the obligations of a minister's wife kept her busy. However, the death of her only son inspired her to write her first novel, 'Mary Barton', which was published anonymously in 1848. It was an immediate success, winning the praise of Charles Dickens and Thomas Carlyle. Gaskell died on 12 November 1865, leaving her longest work, 'Wives and Daughters' incomplete.

Z Elizabeth Gaskell Biography Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865), often referred to simply as Mrs Gaskell, was a British novelist. She was born Elizabeth Stevenson in London in 1810. Her mother Eliza, the niece of the potter Josiah Wedgwood, died when she was a child. Much of her childhood was spent in Cheshire, where she lived with an aunt at Knutsford, a town she would later immortalise as Cranford. She also spent some time in Edinburgh. Her stepmother was a sister of the Scottish miniature artist, W. J. Thomson, who painted a famous portrait of Elizabeth in 1832. In the same year, she married a Unitarian minister, William Gaskell (who had a literary career of his own), and they settled in Manchester. The industrial surroundings would also offer inspiration for her novels. The circles in which they moved included religious dissenters and social reformers, including William and Mary Howitt. Mrs Gaskell's first novel, Mary Barton, was published anonymously in 1848. The best-known of her remaining novels are Cranford (1853), North and South (1855), and Wives and Daughters (1865). She was a friend of Charles Dickens, and wrote a biography of Charlotte Brontë. Mrs Gaskell today ranks as one of the most highly-regarded British novelists of the Victorian era.

This has meant I have been able to enjoy the delightful North and South [1] which was adapted from the book of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell [2] . I will admit that on first viewing I thought it was going to be some carbon copy historical drama. In fact it was the delectable Daniela Denby-Ashe [3] who held my attention while I got past the stereotypes and my 30 second assessment that this was essentially Pride and Prejudice North and South . Anyway, the last episode aired tonight and it concluded in a way that will certainly please any romantics out there (of which I am unashamedly one), though it was a little short, and a little predictable. Anyway, my thanks to the cast and crew, my Sunday evenings will be a duller place without you. Incidently, for those who missed it, there is a DVD set due out some time in summer 2005, no dates confirmed as yet.
