by Fred T. Beeman Gary Gray Gary Dickson Gray, a former child star (since the age of 3) was born December 18, 1936 in Los Angeles and passed away April 4th of this year in Brush Prairie, Washington, succumbing to prostate cancer at age 69. A modest, humble and unassuming man, most of his acquaintances and friends were unaware that the swimming pool maintenance company owner had once acted opposite the likes of Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis (before they married each other), James Whitmore, Joan Crawford, “ and of course…Lassie.” He didn’t deny his acting past, but didn’t want others to think of him as some sort of “braggart” or “showoff,” so he commented on it, only when asked. In the movie, “The Next Voice You Hear” (1950), Gary played the son of James Whitmore and Nancy Davis, but, in reality, was only 15 years younger than Whitmore. That movie focused on an Indiana community, reacting to hearing the voice of God on their radios. In the 1950s, future actress/model Connie Stevens was so much a fan of his, that the Brooklyn-based teenager started (and was the self-appointed president of)

Thomas Gray
Thomas Gray was educated at Eton, where two of his uncles were teachers, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. The university was to become his home for the rest of his life, for, after a tour of the continent with his Eton contemporary Hugh Walpole, he returned after a quarrel with Walpole to his former college as a fellow-commoner, graduating as Bachelor of Laws in 1743. Having repaired his relationship with Walpole, he had several poems published by him but it was the publication of his masterpiece, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard , in 1750, which led to his instant and everlasting fame. Always a quiet, studious and somewhat reclusive character, Gray transferred to Pembroke College in 1756, complaining that his Peterhouse colleagues were too noisy. The following year he was offered the post of Poet Laureate, but declined. He was a perfectionist by nature whose output was small but immaculately crafted. Elegy written in a Country Churchyard

Thomas Gray 1716- 1771
Thomas Gray was a learned scholar who, apart from a two year sojourn on the continent with his old school friend Horace Walpole, lived much of his uneventful life in Cambridge, devoted to antiquarian and botanical pursuits. His Elegy in a Country Churchyard , published anonymously in 1751, remains one of the best loved and most widely quoted poems in the English language - it provided Thomas Hardy with the title for his 1874 novel, Far From the Madding Crowd . The poem's success, and the popularity of the work that followed it, much of it concerned with the sublime and the picaresque, led to Gray being offered the Poet Laureateship when Colley Cibber died in 1757. He declined. Gray's melancholy, lyrical verse, with its engagement with landscape and emotion, place him among a number of late 18th century poets who broke away from neo-classicism, and in doing so paved the way for the Romantics.

Written in a Country Churchyard The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd winds slowly o'er the lea,
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way
And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Now fades the glimmering landscape on the sight,
And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,
And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds: Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tower
The moping owl does to the moon complain
Of such as, wandering near her secret bower,
Molest her ancient solitary reign. Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade Where heaves the turf in many a mouldering heap, Each in his narrow cell for ever laid, The rude Forefathers of the hamlet sleep. The breezy call of incense-breathing morn, The swallow twittering from the straw-built shed, The cock's shrill clarion, or the echoing horn, No more shall rouse them from their lowly bed.

Thomas GRAY Duncan Gray and Hannah McBride, the parents of the subject of this sketch, were natives of Ireland. The latter came to America with her parents, who settled in Pennsylvania when she was very young, and the former came over about 1780, and their marriage occurred about 1787. They came to Livingston county in 1806, and located in the town of Geneseo. Duncan Gray enlisted in the service of the United States, marched to the front, took part in the battle of Chippewa in the war of 1812, and was lost in that engagement; but in what manner he was killed is not known, as he has never been heard of since. His widow died July 14, 1847, aged eighty-one years. They had eight children, viz: Hugh, Daniel, James, Mary, Thomas, William and Jane, none of whom are now living except Thomas, who was born August 18, 1798, and lived at home with his mother until two years after his marriage, assisting his mother in the management of her small farm, and occasionally attending school winters. His advantages for obtaining even a common school education were extremely limited, as all of his time and best energies were required to secure a scanty living for his mother, two younger children and himself. In all business transactions he has endeavored to be strictly just, and has passed through life without a stain resting upon his character. There have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Gray six children, as follows: -Catherine, born Sept. 21, 1826, died Dec. 21, 1866; Daniel Harvey, born Sept. 7, 1829, unmarried; Lydia Maria, born May 13, 1834, married to Lorenzo P. Roe, of Geneseo, and residing in that town: Josepha, born July 8, 1836, married to Wm. Davis, of Geneseo, and residing in the town of Avon; Leonora Elizabeth, born July 20, 1844, married to Thomas Jefferson Wynn, of Geneseo, and Edgar Lotharin, born Feb. 20, 1849, married to Martha Diefenbacher, of Geneseo, by whom he has one son, Clyde D., born Dec. 30, 1876.

Understanding Thomas Gray
Working draft: still under construction
Once Gray was at Eton his life changed forever, he was never very interested in extra curricular activities, nor spent time at social affairs; Gray was rather very studious and loved his experience at Eton. It was here where he met his best friends that would be with him in his time at Eton. The four boys (Gray, Walpole, Ashton, and Wes) formed a "quadruple alliance" of the warmest friendship (Gosse19). Thomas Ashton, Richard West, and Horace Walpole were the three friends Gray would spend most of his time and intellectual interests with. At all events Gray and Walpole became fast friends and festered in one another's intellectual pretensions of alarming nature (Gosse 15). They gave themselves nicknames taken from poetry and mythology, Gray was "Orosmades", Walpole was "Celadon", West was "Favonius" or "Zephyrus", and Ashton was "Almanzor" (Hubber).
In October of 1734 Gray moved on to Peter house, at Cambridge. Separated from the quadruple alliance he would write letters in Latin and French and produce whitey intellectual lines to keep his friendships strong; these were his first baby steps to becoming a masterful poet. Although Gray was studious and intellectual he had a difficult time at Cambridge due to his lack of interest in other areas and did not graduate at the usual time. With his studies and boring academics Gray had no time for sports. Gray and Walpole were a pair of weakly little boys and in the days of brisk athletics were hardly allowed to exist (Gosse 16). Gray particularly disliked mathematics and philosophy. Gray left Cambridge without a degree and moved back home with his father, probrolly intending to study law. He was in no hurry to begin his studies and enjoyed relative financial freedom due to some wealthy inheritance of his maternal aunt Sarah.
