from Miette's Bedtime Story Podcast on June 14, 2006
45 views Have waited nearly a year to read Hardy on his birthday, because I strongly suspect that Hardy s just the sort of guy who should be birthdayishly feted, and in neither in an ironic nor a pointy-paper-hat way. I missed his birthday, as it happens, but not by long and actually, missing it seems appropriately Hardyish as well. also in: education arts literature thomas ... hardy

Thomas hardy was born in Upper Brockhampton, near Dorchester, England. He was educated locally and at 16 was articled to an architect. At 22 he went to London to train as an architect, and returned home in 1867 to pursue his chosen profession. But he had already begun his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady , which was never published. There is speculation that around this time he met and fell in love with Tryphena Sparks, to whom he was related. The nature of their relationship is unclear but 1868 he was sent to St. Juliot, Cornwell, where he met Emma Gifford, whom he married in 1874. This marriage was far from idyllic, but ,ironically, when Emma died in 1912 Hardy was moved to write some of the most moving love poems in the English language. Among his best novels are The return of the Native The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891). After the critical reception of Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (1895), which were publicly attacked for their subject matter and portrayal of sexual relationships, Hardy turned his attention to poetry, which he had always regarded as superior to fiction. Printer-friendly version of section Hardy, Thomas (1840-1928), prolific English novelist and poet. Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, on June 2, 1840, and educated in local schools and later privately. His father, a stonemason and builder, apprenticed him early to a local architect engaged in restoring old churches. From 1862 to 1867 Hardy worked for an architect in London and later continued to practise architecture, despite ill health, in Dorset. Meanwhile he was writing poetry, though with little success. He then turned to novels, finding them more saleable, and by 1874 he was able to support himself by writing. In the same year Hardy married his first wife, Emma Gifford, whom he met while on business in Cornwall. Their marriage lasted until her death in 1912, which prompted Hardy to write his collection of poems titled

    Shut Out that Moon
Close up the casement, draw the blind,
    Shut out that stealing moon,
She wears too much the guise she worse
    Before our lutes were strewn
With years-deep dust, and names we read
On a white stone were hewn.
Step not forth on the dew-dashed lawn
    To view the Lady's Chair,
Immense Orion's glittering form, The Less and Greater Bear: Stay in; to such sights we were drawn When faded ones were fair. Brush not the bough for midnight scent That come forth lingeringly, And wake the same sweet sentiments They breathed to you and me When living seemed a laugh, a love All it was said to be. Within the common lamp-lit room Prison my eyes and thought; Let dingy details crudely loom, Mechanic speech he wrought: Too fragrant was Life's early bloom, Too tart the fruit it brought!

    Jude the Obscure
    Thomas Hardy
Reviewed by: Paul L. locasto@yifan.net Date: 15 July 2003 I have just finished reading Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure (You can find the entire novel online). This novel was one of the most distressing pieces of work I have ever read. It is little effort to understand the type of reception it must have received in England in the late 1800's. Most telling was Hardy's vexation at criticism, that he decided not to write another novel but instead focused on poetry (or so the story goes). To save space, a brief synopsis of the novel can be had here: http://www.mastertexts.com/Hardy_Thomas/Jude_the_Obscure/Index.htm In this social, and very psychological, novel Hardy explores the limitations placed on both social advancement and love by society and its mores. Hardy keeps ambition and social class as well as love and institutional sanction in constant opposition. I'm not sure I completely acccept the interpretation that Sue was a victim of her times- her 'moral' outlook on love vs. marriage defeated, in the end, by society and their harsh condemnation of her attempt to buck status quo. There is a certain fickleness in her that I am all too familar with - and surely my familiarity does not rely on times where a woman crying out against the unfairness of society (as unfair as it may be). But then again, who knows. At least, she is very fragile psychologically- the question remaining is whether her fragility was a consequence of her tragic struggle against soceity, or her struggle against society a tragic consequence of her psychological fragility. Like almost everything in life, its probably a cocktail of the pair.

Thomas Hardy was born in Dorset, the son of a stonemason. He was educated at a school in Dorchester and on leaving trained as an architect, working first locally and later in London. His employer encouraged him to write on a full-time basis and between 1871 and 1895 he produced a succession of West Country-based novels, whose underlying theme in the intensity of human relationships in the context of an unfeeling world. Although best known as a novelist, Hardy was a prolific poet particularly in his latter years and his works include the Wessex Poems (1898), the epic of the Napoleonic Wars, The Dynasts , and a number of volumes of lyrics.
