HERMANN HESSE QUOTES All suicides have the responsibility of fighting against the temptation of suicide. Every one of them knows very well in some corner of his soul that suicide, though a way out, is rather a mean and shabby one, and that it is nobler and finer to be conquered by life than to fall by one's own hand. HERMANN HESSE, Steppenwolf In each individual the spirit is made flesh, in each one the whole of creation suffers, in each one a Savior is crucified. HERMANN HESSE, Demian The mind is international and supra-national ... it ought to serve not war and annihilation, but peace and reconciliation. HERMANN HESSE, letter read at Nobel banquet, Dec. 10, 1946 Love isn't there to make us happy. I believe it exists to show us how much we can endure. HERMANN HESSE, Peter Camenzind If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us. HERMANN HESSE, Demian The call of death is a call of love. Death can be sweet if we answer it in the affirmative, if we accept it as one of the great eternal forms of life and transformation. HERMANN HESSE, letter, 1950

Z Hermann Hesse Biography Hermann Hesse (July 2, 1877 - August 9, 1962) was a German author, and the winner of the 1946 Nobel Prize in literature. He is most famous for his novels Steppenwolf and Das Glasperlenspiel (The Glass Bead Game).
Hesse's interests in existential, spiritual, and mystical themes and Buddhist and Hindu philosophy may be seen in his works.
Born on July 2, 1877 in Calw, Württemberg, Hesse emigrated to Switzerland in 1912 and in 1923 became a Swiss citizen.
A staunch pacifist, Hesse opposed World War I strongly, the residual fallout of his feelings towards war can be seen in many of his books. During World War II his writings found strange allies. German propagandist Joseph Goebbels initially defended Hesse's books, and as a result he was allowed to continue writing unmolested. However, after he demanded that certain portions in his book Narcissus and Goldmund dealing with pogroms be untouched, he found himself on the Nazi's blacklist. Despite this omnious bidding Hesse escaped World War II unharmed.
A prominent feature of many of his books, Hesse had many problems throughout his life with women. His first marriage with Maria Bernoulli, from whom he had three children, ended sadly, his wife having mental problems. His second marriage was apparently a brief flame with Ruth Wenger, lasting only a few months. He finally married Ninon Dolbin in 1931, and remained with her for the rest of his life.

Hesse, Hermann Hesse, Hermann (1877-1962), German-born Swiss novelist and poet. He was posthumously turned into a cult figure of the 1960s and 1970s in the English-speaking world for his celebration of Eastern mysticism and the search for self. Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany. The son of a former missionary, he was enrolled in a seminary but soon left school; his rebellion against formal education was expressed in the novel Unterm Rad (1906; Beneath the Wheel, 1958). Thereafter, he educated himself through reading. As a young man he worked for a bookseller and did freelance journalism, which inspired his first novel, Peter Camenzind (1904; trans. 1961), the story of a dissolute writer who rejects society in favour of a vagabond existence.

Beneath the Wheel Siddhartha Narcissus and Goldmund Steppenwolf ... The Fairy Tales of Hermann Hesse Beneath the Wheel Order from Amazon.com Top of Page Siddhartha Oh, look. Hesse wrote about a perfect being coming to terms with himself. What a surprise. All kidding aside, though, this book was pretty good. This book follows Siddhartha from being a child everyone looked to as somewhat different and special through his life as he learns who he is through trials, and tribulations. He is stripped of everything meaningful to him. He watches his lover die and then kills a man. He even seduces a princess. This is an easy character to hate because he has all the answers and copes with even the most demoralizing situations. At the same time, his life is not really one to envy. Order from Amazon.com Top of Page Narcissus and Goldmund As in Steppenwolf, Hesse explores the dual nature of the human character. The intellectual and the emotional halves are represented in this book by two brethren at a monastery. In this book, unlike Steppenwolf, we follow the emotional character trying to reconcile himself to his intellectual side. Well, that may not be exactly right. It's more like this extremely humanistic character (Goldmund) is dropped at a monastery after his mother dies. He shows great promise, but it is clear that he does not belong there. So he travels in order to find himself. Damned if he doesn't realize that he has some kind of dual nature. This book was more tedious to read than Hesse's other works (most notably Steppenwolf, Siddhartha and Demian). However, it does attempt to tell the story from the other (emotional) side and is therefore worth reading.
