The ancient Greeks considered the Iliad and the Odyssey Odyssey suggest that the author of the poems must have had sight at some point in his life. Modern scholars believe that the epics were based on oral legends, but it would be difficult for many people to memorize the long epics. This suggests that the Greeks had some form of writing long before their civilization flourished.

The name ' Homer' is still used as a convenient term for the author or authors of the two great epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey. But nothing whatever is known concerning these early poets: instead of biography, we find the 'Homeric Question'that is, the problem of the time and place at which the two poems were made, and the manner in which they assumed their present shape.

Iliad
Genre - Epic
Literary works are divided into various categories called genres in accordance with their characteristic form and content. The Iliad belongs to the genre of epic. An epic is a long poem which tells a story involving gods, heroes and heroic exploits. Since the epic is by its very nature lengthy, it tends to be rather loosely organized. Not every episode is absolutely necessary to the main story and digressions are not uncommon. You will notice how different in this regard is the genre of drama, in which every episode tends to be essential to the plot and digressions are inappropriate. The events narrated in epic are drawn from legend rather than invented by the poet and are typically of great significance as in the case of the Iliad , which relates an important incident centering around the greatest hero of the Greeks in the Trojan War, the most celebrated war of Greek legend (see Troy for more information on the Trojan War). The epic poet tends to present his narrative impersonally, not drawing attention to himself except occasionally, as in the first line of the

HOMER WAS NOT A PERSON: HE WAS AN AGE AND A PEOPLE, AND THE LITERATURE THEY PRODUCED

HOMERIC TROY AND HOMERIC ITHAKA
All the descriptions of Ilios and its environs contained in the Iliad , like all the descriptions of Ithaka and its environs contained in the Odyssey , reflect geographical and archaeological realities to be found along the length of Croatia's Dalmatian Coast, where the town of Gabela on the right bank of the Neretva River corresponds with the celebrated Ilios of the Iliad , and the ruins of Donja Vrucica situated at the far end of the Peljesac Peninsula with the Ithaka of the Odyssey THE TROY KNOWN TO THE GREEKS That the Greeks identified Troy with Hissarlik at the southern entrance to the Dardanelles, and Ithaka with an island by the same name at the mouth of the Gulf of Patras has nothing to do with what the Iliad and the Odyssey have to say about these places, for these identifications were not made until some four centuries after the fact, once Homer had appeared suddenly on the Greek literary scene.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius:
Selections Annotated and Explained

Russell McNeil, PhD
Editor, Malaspina Great Books
In 1862 the English literary critic and poet Matthew Arnold described Marcus Aurelius as "the most beautiful figure in history." The Stoicism of Aurelius is grounded in rationality and rests solidly on an ethical approach rooted in nature. Stoicism promises real happiness and joy in this life and a serenity that can never be soured by personal misfortune. This philosophy has universal appeal with practical implications on problems ranging from climate change and terrorism to the personal management of sickness, aging, depression and addiction. I truly believe that the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius has much to offer us now...(Click on book cover for more)

USS Lake Erie and the Satellite Shootdown
In case you don't know who he is, Homer was a poor West Virginia miner's son who worked his way up to being an employee/scientist for NASA. He wrote a book called "Rocket Boy" which was later made into a great movie called "October Sky."
This morning he was interviewed and said this, about the one-shot shootdown of the crippled satellite:
"If this country's head was on straight, they would be holding a ticker-tape parade for the crew of the Cruiser, USS Lake Erie."
This one rocket firing boosted our national defense 100-fold. North Korea, Iran, China, Russia, all know now that we have a safety net that can accurately stop their incoming missiles even if they are out of the earth's atmosphere.
Of course that was the plan all along, and it was a dandy plan.
