HOMER, Alaska It’s the westernmost off-grid community in America. And make no mistake, It’s a community. Its literally at the end of the road, where the Sterling Highway peters out at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. They call it the Halibut capital of America. But its a lot more than that - with art galleries, fine dining, an impressive museum, and amazing scenery across the jagged peaks and glaciers of the Kenai Mountains. Just up the street is the Old Inlet Bookshop, whose shelves are crammed from floor to ceiling with a wondrous selection of used paperbacks.

City of Homer
Homer, the county seat of Banks County, was incorporated on December 19, 1859. The city was named after Homer Jackson, a prominent early settler. The Banks County courthouse, in Homer, is one of the four oldest courthouses in Georgia. The courthouse was built between 1860 and 1863 and the county used it until 1987, when it was restored. Today it houses historic exhibits, the Banks Chamber of Commerce and the Welcome Center.

HOMER (9th century B.C.) H OMER will always remain the greatest and most typical name not only in ancient poetry, but in ancient art as a whole. Whatever conclusions modern scholars have arrived at concerning the origin of the Homeric poems, they would all agree in placing the name of Homer where Comte has placed it; and the reasons of their choice would be in substance the same as his: (i) Homer is the greatest representative of primitive pre-literary poetry. (ii) The IliadI and the Odyssey are the types of epic poetry; and contain, in detail, some of the noblest and purest poetry in the world. (iii) Homer is a most important sorce of knowledge as to the life and thought of primitive Greece. (iv) Homer is the principal factor in the intellectual development of Greece, the type and model of Greek art and character.

    Winslow Homer Biography (February 24, 1836 – September 29, 1910)
Winslow Homer was a noted American artist during the 1800's. He is remembered for his landscapes, many featuring scenes of the sea, boats, and coastlines. Homer did not receive formal art training. He began his art career as an apprentice for a commercial lithographer. In the late 1850's he began doing work for Harper's Weekly. His early work for Harper's was primarily to create line art drawings from photographs. At the time pictures were printed by "stamping" them from a large wood block. To do this, photographs had to first be converted to line art drawings by an artist. In this role, there was little room for artistic interpretation . . . the task was simply to as accurately as possible capture the details of a photograph in a drawing. As such, this work was often published without attribution to Homer. There are several examples of illustrations published which were photographs by Mathew Brady, and then converted to line art by Winslow Homer. As time progressed, Harper's began to expand Homer's role, and he was sent to events to directly create drawings. A notable example was that Homer attended Abraham Lincoln's inauguration, and created several drawings which were published by Harper's. Much of this early work could be described as accurate drawings and illustrations. He was simply capturing the image in front of him as carefully as possible.

Her catalogue is a landmark in Homer studies. It puts Homer in his true relationship to illustration, to other American art and to the European and English examples he followed, from Ruskin to Millet ; its vivacity of argument matches that of the paintings. Cooper has brought together some two hundred watercolors-almost a third of Homer's known output. It is a wholly delectable show, and it makes clear why watercolor, in its special freshness and immediacy, gave Homer access to moments of vision he did not have in the weightier, slower diction of oils. "You will see, in the future I will live by my watercolors," Homer once remarked, and he was almost right. He came to the medium late: he was thirty-seven and a mature artist. A distinct air of the Salon, of the desire for a "major" utterance that leads to an overworked surface, clings to some of the early watercolors-in particular, the paintings of

    http://www.crystalinks.com/homer.html
Homer was a legendary early Greek poet traditionally credited with writing the major Greek epics The Iliad and The Odyssey. These two works represent a brilliant retelling of myths and legends. For the Greeks of the 7th century BC. however, these books were their history. Their past had been obliterated by the destruction of Mycenaean Civilization. The later historian Herodotus - fifth century BC - wrote that Homer was a Greek from Ionia on the west coast of Asia Minor. He was perhaps a native of the island of Chios and supposedly lived around 850 BC. Other historians place him closer to 750 BC. Tradition depicts Homer as a blind minstrel wandering from place to place reciting poems that had come down to him from a very old oral tradition. Many scholars believe that the books as they exist today were not written by a single person and were not put in writing until centuries after they took their present form. It is probable that much of the epic tradition of the two books was formed in the 200 or 300 years before an alphabet reached Greece in the 9th or 8th century BC. If so, it is possible that Homer used earlier writings to help him, or he could have dictated his poems to someone else because of his blindness or because he was illiterate. The Homeric Question Scholars generally agree that the Iliad and Odyssey underwent a process of standardization and refinement out of older material beginning in the 8th century BC. An important role in this standardization appears to have been played by the Athenian tyrant Hipparchus, who reformed the recitation of Homeric poetry at the Panathenaic festival. Many classicists hold that this reform must have involved the production of a canonical written text.
