Hopkins was born in Stratford, Essex. He was educated at Highgate School and Balliol College, Oxford University, where he was deeply influenced by John Henry Newman and the Oxford Movement . In 1866 he converted to Roman Catholicism. Upon entering the Jesuit order two years later, he burnt all the poetry he had already written, although a few poems (“The Alchemist in the City”, “Heaven-Haven”, and “The Habit of Perfection”) did survive what he called this “slaughter of the innocents”. Between 1874 and 1877, as a student of theology at St Beuno's College, north Wales, Hopkins studied the Welsh language; inspired by its poetry, he began to write again (but only after his superior in the Church encouraged him to do so). His first great masterpiece was “The Wreck of the Deutschland” (1875). This long poem, dedicated “To the happy memory of five Franciscan nuns ... drowned between midnight and morning of Dec. 7th 1875”, evinces the first use of techniques perfected by Hopkins in later works such as “The Windhover”, “Pied Beauty”, “Duns Scotus' Oxford”, and “Henry Purcell”: as Hopkins's friend and fellow poet

Dieses lange erz¤hlerische Gedicht, in dem es um das Martyrium einer Gruppe schiffbr¼chiger deutscher Nonnen geht, zeugt erstmals von den Techniken, die Hopkins in sp¤teren Werken zur Vollendung f¼hrte. Diese lyrischen Gedichte sind der Versuch, das Individuelle oder Wesentliche des behandelten Objekts durch den Gebrauch von Binnenreim, Stabreimen, zusammengesetzten Metaphern sowie durch den so genannten „Sprungrhythmus” zu erfassen –
