Horace Walpole (1717–1797) , English historian, Member of Parliament, connoisseur, playwright and novelist, said to have coined the term serendipity wrote the Gothic novel Castle of Otranto Fourth Earl of Orford, Horace Walpole was born 24 September 1717 in Arlington Street, Piccadilly, Westminster, London, England, the third son of Whig politician and First Earl of Orford Sir Robert Walpole, who would soon be England's longest running Prime Minister, and his wife Catherine née Shorter. Young Horace spent most of his childhood under the loving eye of his mother whilst his father was away much of the time on business and often with his mistress Maria Skerrett, who he would later marry. Walpole was tutored at home before entering Eton College in 1727, and then on to King's College, Cambridge in March 1735. Lady Walpole died in 1737, much to the distress of her son, possibly leading to his departure in 1738 from Cambridge before finishing his degree. He embarked on the Grand Tour of the continent with his friend whom he had met at Eton, poet Thomas Gray (1716-1771), though they would prove to be incompatible travel companions. Immersing themselves in the social life, they went to Paris and Rheims then on to Florence and Tuscany. It was there that he met the British minister to the court of Tuscany, Horace Mann, with whom he became great friends, and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu of whom he would write about sardonically later. Walpole quarrelled with Gray and they parted ways in 1741. It is likely that Walpole was homosexual and preferred the non-committal company of older women.

Letter to Horace Greeley
Written during the heart of the Civil War, this is one of Abraham Lincoln's most famous letters. Greeley, editor of the influential New York Tribune, had just addressed an editorial to Lincoln called "The Prayer of Twenty Millions," making demands and implying that Lincoln's administration lacked direction and resolve. President Lincoln made his reply when a draft of the Emancipation Proclamation already lay in his desk drawer. His response revealed his concentration on preserving the Union. The letter, which received acclaim in the North, stands as a classic statement of Lincoln's constitutional responsibilities. A few years after the president's death, Greeley wrote an assessment of Lincoln. He stated that Lincoln did not actually respond to his editorial but used it instead as a platform to prepare the public for his "altered position" on emancipation. Executive Mansion,

Horace (65-8BC) [Quintus Horacius Flaccus] Latin Poet, Satirist
Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was born on November 27, 8 BC. The renowned Roman Satirist and Lyrist was known in the English world as Horace. His father was a manumitted slave, however, he saved enough to see to Horace's education. His lyrical writings ('satires and lampoons') were to eventually come to the attention of Virgil and, in turn, to one of the ministers of Octavianus. With the recognition of those on high and gifts bestowed (one of which was a farm in the Sabinian Hills above Rome), Horace was able to lead a life of leisure and luxury; and, eventually, was to acquire the position of the poet laureate. His poetry supplies more phrases which have become proverbial than the rest of Latin literature put together.
A picture is a poem without words.
Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it.
A word once uttered can never be recalled.

Horace Wells
Horace Wells was a compassionate dentist of deep religious convictions. In the aftermath of an especially agonising dental operation, he would sometimes stop work for several weeks, too traumatised by the need to inflict such terrible pain on his patients to continue. There were periods when he even considered giving up dentistry altogether. Fortunately, he persevered. By all accounts, Wells was a creative and successful dentist. From his office in Hartford, Connecticut, he popularised diligent tooth-brushing with the slogan, "The clean tooth does not decay!" On 10th December 1844, Wells and his wife Elizabeth attended a stage-show laid on by "Professor" Gardner Quincy Colton . After watching an acquaintance, store-clerk Sam Cooley, injure his leg without batting an eyelid, Wells recognised that nitrous oxide might prove a godsend to surgical medicine as well as popular entertainment. According to Dr. Ernest A. Wells [ The Discoverer of Anaesthesia: Dr. Horace Wells of Hartford Tercentenary Commission . Yale University Press, 1933]

Several of My Trees
Below are pic's of a few of my trees. These were taken in the late summer of '95 - my second attempt at presentable photos. These are a bit better than the last batch but I still can't get the depth or detail that I would like. I guess the next batch will be even better - yes - I, at least, try to be an optimist . This was my first time using a photo-CD rather than scanned photos and I'm still trying to figure out how to get the best renderings from the .PCD files. As I find time, I will be adding a few more icons ( made from these new photos ) to the icon collection - so, if you're interested, keep an eye peeled for additions. You might also be interested in - where I have put photos of a few trees that exhibit typical styling problems - along with advice from online contributors. Horace Greeley
Horace Greeley was born in Amherst, New Hampshire in the farm country west of Nashua and Manchester . His schooling was intermittent, but he was an enthusiastic reader. At age 15 he was apprenticed to a printer in Vermont and began learning a trade he would follow, in one form or another, for the remainder of his life. In 1831 Greeley settled in New York City and quickly became involved in a number of publishing ventures, including the New Yorker (1834), which dealt with current events, the arts and literature. He became, for a while, an ally of Thurlow Weed and William H. Seward , joining them in championing a number of political reforms. The New York Tribune , one of the earliest “penny dailies” popular in the era, was established in 1841. Greeley also would publish a weekly nationwide edition of the Tribune , which won him and his views wide recognition. The Tribune set a higher tone than its competitors by avoiding sensationalism and offering regular features such as book reviews.
