Best known by his penname, Issa, his child name was Yataro and registered name was Nobuyuki. He was born in Kashiwabara, now part of Shinano-machi (Shinano Town), Nagano Prefecture. Issa wrote poetry that is especially remarkable considering the life of the poet. His mother died when he was very young, and his father's second wife became a plague upon his soul until he left home at the age of thirteen for Edo (now Tokyo) with his father's help, and lived in poverty for twenty years. His life in Edo is unrecorded until 1787, by which time he was at the Katsushika haiku school. Issa started to write haiku at about the age of 25, having learned it from Genmu and Chiku-a, and had Seibi Natsume as his patron.. Elected to succeed his deceased teacher in 1791, Issa soon resigned and wandered throughout southwest Japan until his father's death in 1801. Although he was named principal heir in his father's will, his stepmother and half brother conspired successfully to keep Issa from the property for thirteen more years. 2008 Slalom Racing Season Springs Into High Gear [March 25, 2008] From Staff Reports The 2008 slalom racing season kicks off in a big way with the coming of spring. The 2008 Texas Cold Fusion Sizzler goes down March 29 and 30 in Austin, Texas. For the seventh straight year the Texas Outlaws put on this Prime event deep in the heart of Texas. Giant Slalom and dual hybrid racing fills the bill with some of the most fun nightlife available happening all over Austin after hours. Johnny "Thriller" Miller is putting on a big race in a big way at Morro Bay, California. His April Fools Skate Race on April 5 promises to offer what can only be called the Mother Of All Start Ramps. Miller's Monster stands ten feet and will produce some incredible speeds at the top of the hill. Turri Road is a world-class hill and John O'Shei will be on hand to set a world-class GS course. The Downhillbillies will hold their Beast Of The East Slalom Jam April 11 through the 13th with an outlaw race Thursday the 10th for everyone who can get into town. Billed as a "Giant Slalom Weekend," the DHBs have hills lined up from Mooresville to Winston Salem, North Carolina for all your big-turns pleasure. The hill in Mooresville is promised to rate about a 9 on the Pucker Factor while the site of the Worlds' GS, Bluegill, will host more racing on Saturday. Sunday will see the party move to the now-venerable Hobby Park hill for one of the DHB's classic jam sessions.

Issa's stepmother mistreated him and, when he was fourteen, Issa was sent to Edo (Tokyo) where he studied haiku. Although he gained some notoriety for his poetry early on, he struggled to get by financially and had to travel and work hard until his fifties. When his father died, Issa had further troubles with his stepmother who prevented him from inheriting his father's property for some time. He eventually was able to claim his inheritance, however.
