Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
Jefferson was a man of many talents. He was the author of the Declaration of American Independence, a founding father of the United States and the country's third president. Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia, on 13 April 1743 into a wealthy landowning family. He studied law and practiced until the early 1770s. He served as a magistrate and was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1769 to 1775. By 1774, he was actively involved in organising opposition to British rule, and in his pamphlet 'A Summary View of the Rights of British America' Jefferson articulated the colonial position for independence. As a member of the second Continental Congress, he was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. He returned to Virginia and served as governor from 1779 to 1781. In 1784, Jefferson went to France where he served first as trade commissioner and then as American ambassador. He was in France for four years and witnessed the beginning of the French Revolution.

Before enrolling at Little Rock Central High School , he attended Horace Mann High School and was a member of the track team. A quiet student, Thomas was often a target for bullies at Central. He graduated from Central High School in 1960. Thomas narrated the United States Information Agency 's 1964 film Nine From Little Rock . In the film Thomas said, "If Little Rock taught us nothing more, it taught us that problems can make us better. Much better." The goal of this government propaganda film, in the context of the Cold War, was to show countries concerned about American racism the supposed progress the United States had made with respect to civil rights. It achieved this goal at least in part as the film received wide acclaim (including an Academy Award ) and was distributed to 97 countries. As an adult, Thomas worked as an accountant for the United States Department of Defense . Along with the rest of the Little Rock Nine, he has received the

A Biography of the Anthropologist Thomas Jefferson.
http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/information/biography/fghij/jefferson_thomas.html
Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson, the Third President of the United States and the author of the Declaration of Independence , was a scientist at heart. Although he made many contributions to science as a whole, he set the stage for the methods used in modern field archeology. With a "consuming interest in the Indians, Jefferson had long been preoccupied with the puzzle of the mounds" (Bedini, 1990:103) which had been discovered all over the east coast of the United States. It was during the excavation of one of these mounds near the Rivanna River that Jefferson discovered Native American remains. By using a methodical approach to their exhumation and keeping detailed notes on where each bone was discovered in the mound, he was able to come to certain conclusions as to what the mound represented. "[Thomas Jefferson] stressed the importance of basing conclusions on observation and experiment" - Edwin Martin, 1952 Jefferson's description of his dig comes from his Notes on the State of Virginia . From his records and the bones taken from the mound, Jefferson tried to figure out exactly how many individuals were actually buried, the age of the individuals, how long the bones had been buried and why they were in this location (Padover, 1943:634-635). He was unable to answer all of these questions, but he did make the contribution of the "principle of stratigraphy in archeological excavation" (Bedini, 1990:105). These principles show that those objects that lay above other objects were placed there later, barring certain sorts of disruption which may confuse the site (and the person performing the excavation).
