Flavius Josephus (37 - 100 AD), a Jewish general and member of the priestly aristocracy of the Jews, turned to the side of the Roman Empire in the great Jewish revolt of 66-70 AD. Josephus spent the rest of his life in or around Rome as an advisor and historian to three emperors, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian. For centuries, the works of Josephus were more widely read in Europe than any book other than the Bible. They are invaluable sources of eyewitness testimony to the development of Western civilization, including the foundation and growth of Christianity in the 1st Century.
Remarkably, Flavius Josephus mentions New Testament events and people in some of his works. For me, this was some of the most significant evidence against the legend theories that plagued my view of early Christianity. Here are some excerpts I found fascinating:
At this time there was a wise man who was called Jesus. And his conduct was good, and he was known to be virtuous. And many people from among the Jews and other nations became his disciples. Pilate condemned him to be crucified and to die. And those who had become his disciples did not abandon his discipleship. They reported that he had appeared to them three days after his crucifixion and that he was alive; accordingly, he was perhaps the Messiah concerning whom the prophets have recounted wonders.
After the death of the procurator Festus, when Albinus was about to succeed him, the high-priest Ananius considered it a favorable opportunity to assemble the Sanhedrin. He therefore caused James the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, and several others, to appear before this hastily assembled council, and pronounced upon them the sentence of death by stoning. All the wise men and strict observers of the law who were at Jerusalem expressed their disapprobation of this act...Some even went to Albinus himself, who had departed to Alexandria, to bring this breach of the law under his observation, and to inform him that Ananius had acted illegally in assembling the Sanhedrin without the Roman authority.

Death of scientologist Josephus A. Havenith
Newspaper articles of the St. Petersburg Times published in Decembere 1997 mention the suspicious death of Dutch Scientologist Mr. Josephus A. Havenith. An autopsy report lists his death as "probable drowning" but notes that his head was not under water. He died in February 1980 at the Scientology Fort Harrison Hotel in a bathtub filled with water so hot it had burned his skin off. This page is a memorial for Mr. Havenith. Here you'll find an excerpt and one St. Petersburg Times article in full plus what is most probably his picture, taken from a TV documentary by Mona Botros and Egmond R. Koch - ARD (Germany), April 1997 - Die dunkle Seite von Scientology (The dark side of Scientology) . The pictures link to the releated web-pages, just click on them.

Flavius Josephus
You are here: History Learn More about Josephus! Flavius Josephus What was Flavius Josephus' original Hebrew name? What is his history?
Born into a priestly and prestigious line of individuals c. AD 37, Josephus ben Matthias, more commonly known as Flavius Josephus, was to become a highly influential name in Jewish communities. The term "ben" means "son of."
His father was a priest and, along with his brothers, Flavius Josephus was extremely well educated and early on developed a deep interest in learning. He ended up excelling in his studies and quickly progressed beyond the others, seeking new heights.
He had a discipleship under an ascetic hermit named Banus and associated with such sects as the Essenes and Pharisees, the latter of which he officially joined when he was eighteen. By this time he was known as a learned and worldly young man, dedicated to both religious and political issues.
Religiously, Flavius Josephus sought utmost chastity and lived under Banus with the strictest physical diligence, eating only foods that grew on their own, wearing clothes only made from trees, and bathing frequently in cold water.
Politically, Flavius Josephus pleaded release from prison on the behalf of several fellow priests who were awaiting to be tried by Nero. He also openly opposed the Jewish revolt against Rome after seeing the power it flaunted, knowing the damage his people would receive from Rome's reaction.

  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk Pengiun Books, 1959 translation by G. A. Williamson. I own the 1981 edition, quotes will be from that edition. The Jewish War by Josephus is the voluminous, detailed and scholarly report of the first century Jewish revolt against the Roman Empire. The war climaxed with the siege of Jerusalem, built up as it was by King Herod, as the single most beautiful and wonderfully rich city in history. Also one of the most heavily fortified large cities. None other match in fortifications times beauty times defences. The siege, resulting in the wholesale destruction of the most glorious temple, and the starvation of hundreds of thousands of the population (which was also undergoing two civil wars), is the single most bloody, inhumane and shocking thing I've ever read. To read of two armies of desperate bandits torturing their own populace (who were trying to surrender to the Romans), fighting each other, and continually refusing to surrender to the pleading Roman Emperor, Vespasian, despite all hope. Condemning the entire city to flame, blood and destruction and dooming all of its inhabitants to starvation, the two occupying armies of Jerusalem caused the entire beautiful city to be lost. It's harrowing stuff, three chapters detail this final siege, page after page of descriptions of bodies in the streets, plague, disease, famine, internal fighting all while the Romans broke through the immense defences wall at a time. Retreating, wall at a time, to the upper city, then to the outer courts of the temple, then to the inner temple, and then to the sewers under the city, decimating all the populace for their food and fighting each other, the survivors had become soulless, unfeeling, brutal robots, driven by hunger and desperation and yet never surrendering to the Romans to save their own lives, save their city from destruction wall at a time, or to save their temple.

Josephus in the Ante-Nicene Fathers: all the citations
The Testimonium Flavianum is really something I do not have time to write much about. However there seem to be arguments being made about it's authenticity based upon absence of evidence. I expressed my doubts about this approach in a newsgroup, and the following reply was made. I quote it, as the idea seems to be in common circulation: Josephus But is this true? I can't see why the Fathers would normally quote Josephus. So I investigated. This page is the product of a search for the word 'Josephus' in the Ante-Nicene Fathers at http://www.ccel.org/fathers2 . Results from footnotes or Nicene/Post-Nicene Fathers have been ignored, as the latter will know Eusebius, of course. After this I read Michael E. H ARDWICK Josephus as a historical source in Patristic literature through Eusebius , Brown Judaic Studies 128, Scholars Press, Georgia (1989). This covers the same ground, but also looks for possible unattributed references. Finally the references are discussed by Alice W HEALEY , Josephus on Jesus. Studies in Biblical Literature 36. New York: Peter Lang (2003).

    Josephus
    Translator H. St. J. Thackeray
Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE . A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War , in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have; and Jewish Antiquities , in twenty books, from the creation of the world to 66 CE . The Loeb Classical Library edition of the works of Josephus also includes the autobiographical Life and his treatise Against Apion

Brimming with insight, the five titles critically examine Josephus’ Life , analyze his portrayal of the Pharisees throughout his canon, and present a new translation of and commentary on his Judean Antiquities . The Flavius Josephus Collection will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of all Biblicists, scholars of ancient Judaism, and anyone wishing to delve-deeply into the world of the preeminent Jewish chronicler Josephus. Few authors have had as much influence on our understanding of the New Testament world as Josephus. His key works, The Antiquities of the Jews The War of the Jews Against Apion and the autobiographical Life have for centuries been scoured by scholars for their extensive historical and linguistical yield. These works, written from Josephus’ vantage as a first century Jewish historian and eye-witness to the first Jewish-Roman war, render an unparalleled depiction of the historical context in which Jesus and the Apostles lived and died. The impact Josephus has made on scholarship pertaining to the era of Christ cannot be overstated.

    Josephus' Problem
    Algorithm description
This algorithm is named for a historian of the first century, Flavius Josephus, who survived the Jewish-Roman war due to his mathematical talents. Legend has it that he was one out of 41 Jewish rebels trapped by the Romans. His companions preferred suicide to escape, so they decided to form a cycle and to kill every third person and to proceed around the circle until no one was left. Josephus wasn't excited by the idea of killing himself, so he calculated where he has to stand to survive the vicious circle. The following implementation demands the input of how many people will stand around a circle and how many shall be passed over before the next one is killed.
    Algorithm implementation:
    function josephus (N: positive; m: positive) return positive is x : positive; a : double; begin a := double(m); discrete d := 1 in 1..((m-1)*N) new d := ceiling((a/(a-1.0))*double(d)) loop d := ceiling((a/(a-1.0))*double(d)); x := d; end loop return m*N+1-x;
