He earned a degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in 1957 and then studied creative writing at Stanford in the late 50s. While at Stanford he tried hallucinogens for the first time after volunteering for a government research program at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Menlo Park, CA. As part of the program, Kesey was given LSD, psilocybin, mescaline and AMT. It was during this same period that he worked as a psychiatric attendant at the hospital, an experience he used when writing his novel 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'. While at Stanford, Kesey lived at Perry Lane, a bohemian community in Palo Alto where he became known for throwing parties where psychoactive chemicals often found their way into the punch bowl.
After this novel was published, Kesey purchased property in La Honda, California where he and the Merry Pranksters threw the now famous Acid Test parties during the mid 60s. The events, fueled by diverse and intriguing guests, day-glo decorations in the trees, music from hidden speakers, and plenty of LSD, are now well documented. In 1964, Kesey and the Merry Pranksters set out on their cross-country bus trip to the East coast in a psychedelically painted school bus named Furthur. Along the way they met, among others

Ken Kesey Return to..... One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest In 1959 Ken Kesey , a graduate student in creative writing, volunteered to take part in a government research project at Menlo Park Veterans Hospital into the effects of hallucinogenic drugs. During his talks with patients during the night shift he became convinced that they should not be classed as insane but merely did not conform to society's 'norms'. His novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", was the result of these experiences and was an immediate success which funded his family's move to the hills outside San Francisco where he continued his experiments with LSD etc. More about Ken Kesey on the web The following notes were found on the web, but the writer's name was not stated... Ken Kesey, the youngest of two sons, was born in on September 17, 1935 in La Junta, Colorado and in 1946 moved with his family to Springfield, Oregon, where he spent several years on his family's farm. He was raised in a religion household where he developed a great appreciation for Christian fables and the Christian ethical system. During high school and later in college, Kesey was a champion wrestler, setting long-standing state records in Oregon. Voted "most likely to succeed" in high school, Kesey was an unlikely candidate to become one of the most controversial figures of his age and one of the leading figures of the counterculture. After high school, Kesey eloped with Faye Haxby, his high school sweetheart, and they had three children together: Jed, Zane and Shannon. Kesey attended the University of Oregon with a degree in Speech and Communications. He also received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to enroll in the Creative Writing program at Stanford. While at Stanford, he participated in experience involving chemicals at the psychology department to earn extra money. These chemicals included psilocybin, mescaline and LSD. It was this experience that fundamentally altered Kesey, personally and professionally. While working as an orderly at the psychiatric ward of the local VA hospital, Kesey began to have hallucinations about an Indian sweeping the floors. This formed the basis for 'Chief Broom' in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, his writing project at Stanford.

Editura

Ken Kesey
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest What a god-damn phenomenal book. After I finished it, I went out and rented the acclaimed motion picture. What a disappointment that was. I understand that there are limitations in cinema that are not present in print, but I expected there to be more. Just something to hold on to in that film that made it resemble the text. If you haven't read the book, you are missing nearly the entire fucking point. You probably wouldn't even believe me if I told you that the story is told from Chief Bromden's point of view. The entire story is much more visceral, or is that fanciful. Or maybe it's ephemeral. The movie is so shallow. It doesn't do any of the characters justice. That whole damn fishing trip is about the doctor being in on the patients' rebellion and sympathizing with our dear old RP McMurphy. Read the book. You won't regret it.
