NAME: Lawrence, David Herbert ACHIEVEMENTS: The controversial English novel: "Lady Chatterley's Lover" NICKNAME/ALIAS: None DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: 11 September 1885, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England DATE AND PLACE OF DEATH AND AGE AT DEATH: 2 March 1930, Vence, France. Aged 45 DISCIPLINE: Writer FIELD: Literature LANGUAGE: English PARENTS: Father: John Arthur Lawrence Mother: Lydia Beardsall SIBLINGS: 2 brothers: William Ernest, George Arthur 1 sister: Ada SPOUSE: Frieda von Richthofen CHILDREN: None EDUCATION: Nottingham High School British School, Eastwood Notting University College MAJOR WORK: "Sons and Lovers" (1913) "The Rainbow" (1915) "Women in Love" (1920) "Lady Chatterley's Lover" (1928) LIFE AND TIMES: Lawrence's first story was printed in a local newspaper in 1907. He met Ford Madox Ford*, and through him met members of the literary circle around Ford. He began working on his first novel, "The White Peacock" which was heavily influenced by the life of the miners in Nottinghamshire and the countryside around, and by the conflicts in his parents' marriage. Lawrence's mother died in 1910 and soon afterwards "The White Peacock" was published (1911). Lawrence became dangerously ill with double pneumonia in the autumn of 1911 and at the beginning of 1912 he resigned his teaching post. He was working on a second novel: "The Trespasser" (1912), and had some idea of going to lecture in Germany. He went for advice to Ernest Weekley, the professor of modern languages at Nottingham University, and met Frieda, Weekley's aristocratic German wife. They fell in love, and travelled to Germany together. Lawrence wrote to tell Weekley they were having an affair and eventually persuaded Frieda to abandon her husband and children and stay with him. They travelled on foot over the Brenner Pass and settled in Riva, on Lake Garda, Italy, where Lawrence finished the first of his best- known novels: "Sons and Lovers". The novel is a powerful portrayal of the Oedipus Complex theory first formulated by the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in 1905. The novel was published in 1913 and in the same year a collection of Lawrence's poems, "Love Poems and Others" also came out. In July 1914 Lawrence and Frieda married. At the end of that year, Lawrence published a collection of short stories entitled "The Prussian Officer". Lawrence's health made him unfit for military service. In 1915 his novel "The Rainbow" hinted at his anti-war feelings, but it was the sexual scenes which were the trigger for its subsequent suppression.. The book was the subject of a prosecution and Lawrence was involved in costly law suits.. He and Frieda moved to a cottage in an isolated rural area of Cornwall where Lawrence's pacifism and Frieda's German connections (she was cousin to the German air ace, Manfred von Richthofen*) made them objects of hostility. In 1917 they were ordered to leave Cornwall, on suspicion of signalling to German submarines. Lawrence was anxious to leave England and in 1919 he and Frieda returned to Italy where they settled at first in Florence before moving to the Abruzzi, followed by stays in Capri and Taormina, Sicily. In 1920, "Women in Love", the second of Lawrence's best-known books, was privately printed in New York. Lawrence's interest in psychology led to two non-fiction works, "Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious" (1921) and "Fantasia of the Unconscious" (1922). He also wrote two lesser-known novels, "The Lost Girl" (1920) and "Aaron's Rod" (1922). His work on "Studies in Classic American Literature" (1923) inspired him and 1922 the Lawrence's left Sicily and travelled to America via Ceylon and Australia. During a six-week stay in Australia, Lawrence wrote a novel with an Australian setting: "Kangaroo". In September 1922, they arrived in San Francisco and eventually settled on a small ranch in the mountains near Taos, NM. During this period he worked on "The Plumed Serpent" (1926) which has a Mexican setting and explores the idea of society's regeneration through primitive indigenous religion. The nature poetry he wrote at this time was inspired by his travels and was published in 1923 under the title "Birds, Beasts and Flowers". In 1925 he and Frieda returned to Italy after Lawrence had been diagnosed with tuberculosis, and in 1926 they settled near Florence. He began to write and re-write: "Lady Chatterley's Lover," privately published in 1928. In the novel he made his final attempt to break through English attitudes to sex. His aim was to write a realistic novel and also to release sex from the contamination of repression and shame. The novel celebrates the sexual relationship between two loving individuals who also cross the barriers of class and convention. Because, for the first time in his writing, Lawrence described the sexual act, he knew the book would cause problems, and he was plagued throughout his last years by police prosecution of "Lady Chatterley's Lover," whose publication was only finally made legal in 1959-60. Lawrence was further upset by the reaction of the police to an exhibition of his pictures in London in 1928 and by the seizing of the manuscript of his collected poems, "Pansies" which came out in 1929. Lawrence was now dying of tuberculosis and much of the verse in "Last Poems" (1932) is concerned with death. He moved to the south of France in 1928 and died in a French clinic. ASSESSMENT: His most notable contribution was his attempt to write freely about modern attitudes to sexuality and the relationship between the sexes. EXTRA CONNECTIONS: Aldous Huxley*? And Bertrand Russell* ? BIBLIOGRAPHY: Moore, Harry T, The Priest of Love, Heinemann, London, 1976 Worthen, John, D H Lawrence, The Early Years, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1991

If you were lured to this page with the expectation that this page dealt with strictly classical literature , you are due an apology; for as you see, there is more here than classical literature. Academics would say that I had a mixture of Classical, Neoclassical, Romantic and other literature. For the purpose of this page, my definition of classical literature is much more loose: simply any literature of enduring value. I would title these Great Books if Maynard Hutchins and Mortimer Adler had not already claimed that title for ... notes near the bottom for sources author list near the bottom of this page represents the presently contemplated extent of author inclusion. Art-speech is the only truth. An artist is usually a damned liar, but his art, if it be art, will tell you the truth of his day. And that is all that matters. Away with eternal truth. D(avid) H(erbert) Lawrence was born in 1885 in Eastwood, in Nottinghamshire, England. Lawrence's home life was complicated by the constant domestic tensions between his parents, and he felt out of place in Eastwood, which was a rough mining town. After attending university, Lawrence began teaching and worked at establishing a literary career. He created a scandal by eloping with Frieda Weekly, the German born wife of one of his former professors, and the person who was to have the profoundest impact on his work. Lawrence died of tuberculosis in 1930. During his lifetime Lawrence was best known as a novelist, although his first published works were in fact poems. His poetry has come to be more and more highly regarded in the years since his death, and he had a profound influence on succeeding generations of poets, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. Among his collections of poetry were Look! We Have Come Through!

D H Lawrence, author of 'Lady Chatterly's Lover', liked boys.

Richard Kaye, Assistant Professor of English at Hunter College, has written about D H Lawrence and Homosexual Desire.
Kaye points out that in the homosexual novel 'Women in Love', Lawrence is Rupert Birkin and the tale is based partly on Lawrence's 'clamorous relationship' with the literary critic John Middleton-Murray (Gudrun of the novel).
According to Kaye, during the writing of Women in Love, Lawrence had a sexual relationship with a Cornish farmer named William Henry Hocking in the town of Tregerthen.
"I would like to know why nearly every man that approaches greatness tends to homosexuality, whether he admits it or not," Lawrence wrote to a friend in 1913.
Lawrence told another acquaintance, "I believe the nearest I've come to perfect love was with a coal-miner when I was about sixteen."
Kaye writes: 'Like Forster and Gide, Lawrence was fascinated by the mystique of sexual relations with working-class men.'
"The Prussian Officer" (1914) describes the yearning of an officer for the youthful soldier under his command.
