(Doorverwezen vanaf Livius Andronicus Lucius Livius Andronicus (ca. 284 v.Chr. 204 v.Chr. ) was de eerste Latijnse dichter, maar eigenlijk een Griek.
Biografische gegevens
Biografische gegevens zijn er heel weinig over hem... Bij de inname van Tarentum , in het vergriekste Zuid-Itali« , werd de hoogontwikkelde Andronikos door de Romeinen gevangen genomen en als slaaf meegevoerd. Hij leerde snel vloeiend Latijn spreken en kwam terecht in de familie van een zekere Livius, een senator, wiens kinderen hij onderwees, en wiens naam hij na zijn vrijlating ook overnam: Andronikos werd Livius Andronicus. Hij stichtte in Rome een eigen school.
Werken
Ten behoeve van zijn leerlingen vertaalde Livius Andronicus de Odyssee van Homerus in het Latijn. Dat deed hij in de oeroude Latijnse (in oorsprong Indo-Europese)
