Jack London played an important role in writing fiction because he was one of the first American writers to make an income solely from his writing and it was an income that most would consider very lucrative. Jack London's Call of the Wild and other books allowed London to realize success that many writers could only dream about in his era or in today's world. Jack London was born in 1876. Left behind by his father, Jack was raised by his mother in California. Virginia Prentiss, an ex-slave would help raise Jack because his mother was ill most of the time. There has been some discrepancies in the way that his economic status was perceived. Jack believed and stated often that he was impoverished but historians believe that he was in fact, from a working class family with above average means. William Chaney, the astrologer, was believed to be London's father but there wasn't a legal marriage confirmed to prove that London had any ties to Chaney and paternity is only speculated. Jack married but his first marriage lasted only four years. The couple publicly acknowledged that the marriage wasn't one founded on the concept of love. Jack divorced his first wife and married a woman considered by many as his soul mate. The couple bought a ranch that London loved. He once acknowledged that writing had become, for him, a "way to add three or four hundred acres" to his estate.

London, Jack
One hundred years ago, Jack London was a celebrity. Not only was he one of the most popular and highest-paid novelists of his day, but also he was widely known as a political lecturer, socialist, adventurer, sailor, world traveler, farmer, and charismatic media-magnet. As one of the first authors to use his fame to endorse advertising products, London was comfortable in the spotlight. His books were widely known and continue to be internationally popular today.
London was born in 1876 in Oakland, California to a single mother who eventually remarried. He developed a taste for travel and adventure at a very young age. By the time he started high school, young Jack had already worked in a cannery, sailed for Japan on a sealing ship, traveled around the country and spent 30 days in a New York jail for vagrancy. And that was just the beginning of a lifetime of adventure. His next trip, after high school in 1897, was to the Yukon in search of gold and soon afterward his creative energies poured forth. Returning to California, he began to concentrate on writing, forcing himself to write 1,000 words a day. By 1899 his stories were being published in the Atlantic Monthly and other magazines.
With such an interesting history, it is no surprise that London's personal experiences are believed to have inspired some of his best work.

JACK LONDON QUOTES I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. JACK LONDON, intro, Jack London's Tales of Adventure There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive. JACK LONDON, The Call of the Wild One cannot violate the promptings of one's nature without having that nature recoil upon itself. JACK LONDON, White Fang Show me a man with a tattoo and I'll show you a man with an interesting past. JACK LONDON, 1883

By Jack London Percival Ford wondered why he had come. He did not dance. He did not care much for army people. Yet he knew them allgliding and revolving there on the broad lanai of the Seaside, the officers in their fresh-starched uniforms of white, the civilians in white and black, and the women bare of shoulders and arms. After two years in Honolulu the Twentieth was departing to its new station in Alaska, and Percival Ford, as one of the big men of the Islands, could not help knowing the officers and their women. But between knowing and liking was a vast gulf. The army women frightened him just a little. They were in ways quite different from the women he liked bestthe elderly women, the spinsters and the bespectacled maidens, and the very serious women of all ages whom he met on church and library and kindergarten committees, who came meekly to him for contributions and advice. He ruled those women by virtue of his superior mentality, his great wealth, and the high place he occupied in the commercial baronage of Hawaii. And he was not afraid of them in the least. Sex, with them, was not obtrusive. Yes, that was it. There was in them something else, or more, than the assertive grossness of life. He was fastidious; he acknowledged that to himself; and these army women, with their bare shoulders and naked arms, their straight-looking eyes, their vitality and challenging femaleness, jarred upon his sensibilities.
