Richard Lovelace
Richard Lovelace was born in Kent, the son of a wealthy aristocrat. After receiving an honorary degree from Oxford he served as a courtier to King Charles I and fought in the Bishops' Wars. Following these he spent a brief spell in prison and after living abroad for a few years was imprisoned again for his support of the King. During his first imprisonment he wrote To Althea, from Prison which contains the famous lines "Stone walls do not a prison make / Nor iron bars a cage". During his second period of imprisonment he prepared for publication a collection of poems, Lucasta, Epodes, Odes, Sonnets, Songs, etc. Lucasta, Posthume Poems , was published after his death. Richard Lovelace died a poor man, having lost his fortune through his support of the King. His poetry, though not prolific, is sensitive and finely crafted. To Lucasta, going to the Wars

He was born in Woolwich and educated at the University of Oxford. He wrote his first play, The Scholar, at around the age of 16. In 1642 he was imprisoned for presenting to Parliament a petition favouring the restoration of the Anglican bishops who had been excluded from the Long Parliament. He was an ardent Royalist and served with the French army during the Civil War. On his return to England in 1648 he was again imprisoned but was freed in 1649. He spent his large inherited fortune for the Royalist cause and died in poverty and obscurity. Lovelace's verse is uneven in quality. Some poems are strenuously elaborate; the best are characterized by great elegance and grace. He is best known for his lyrics “To Althea, from Prison” and “To Lucasta, Going to the Wars”, both written while he was in prison. The first volume of his poems, Lucasta: Epodes, Odes, Sonnets, Songs, Etc.

Born: Circa 1618, in Woolwich, England or the Netherlands
Died: Circa 1657, in London, England
Richard Lovelace was an English poet and soldier. As a poet, the quality of his work ranges from brilliant to pleasant, and is considered one of the greater Cavalier poets. As a Royalist soldier, he donated all of his available funds to the cause. He may have been born in the Netherlands where his father was serving in the military. His education took place at the University of Oxford. Lovelace was heir to a great estate at Kent. At about the age of sixteen, he wrote a comedy, which was entitled The Scholar. Unfortunately, only the prologue and epilogue are in existence today. He took part in expeditions to Scotland during the rebellions against Charles I between 1639 and 1640. In 1642, Lovelace was imprisoned in the Gatehouse in London. While in the Gatehouse, he wrote To Althea from Prison which contains the famous lines, "Stone walls do not a prison make/Nor iron bars a cage." He also wrote To Lucasta, Going to the Wars while detained.
