Initially, Lois' parents named her "Sena" for her Norwegian grandmother but upon hearing this, her grandmother telegraphed and instructed Lois' parents that the child should have an American name. Her parents chose the names Lois and Ann, which were the names of her father's sisters. Lowry was born the middle of three children. She had an older sister, Helen, and a younger brother Jon. Helen, three years older than Lois, died in 1962 at the age of 28. This experience informed Lowry's first book A Summer to Die which is about a young girl who tragically loses her older sister (which is also a subplot of Number the Stars ). What's New Juvenile Books Author of the Month Lois Lowry 20 March 1937 ? Biography Lois Hammersberg was born on March 20, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Robert E. and Katherine (Landis) Hammersberg. She was the middle child of three with an older sister named Helen and a younger brother named Jon. Her father was an army dentist stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. At the outbreak of the war, Lois moved to Pennsylvania in Amish country to live with her mother's family. As for reading, Lois has always enjoyed realistic fiction. She first read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn when she was 11 years old, and she fondly remembers being read The Yearling when she was nine. She still lists both as being favorites to this day. After the war, Lois and her family lived briefly in Japan before returning to the United States to attend boarding school. In 1954, she started taking classes at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

On Saturday, June 5, fans will be able to eat brunch with Lowry from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the University Room for Special Events in the Glickman Family Library, located at the intersection of Bedford St. and Forest Ave. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling the Alumni Association at 780-4110. Tickets must be reserved in advance. Proceeds of the brunch will benefit the USM Alumni Scholarship Fund. Lowry will be reading from and signing copies of her new book, "Messenger," from 2-4 p.m. on June 5 in the University Room for Special Events. Copies of "Messenger" will be available for purchase in the library. A display of Lowry's past books will be on display in the UnumProvident Great Reading Room, also located on the 7th floor. There is no charge for the reading and book signing.
