Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #16b
Originally written in Latin, approximately A.D. 61-65, by the Roman poet Lucan, and probably left unfinished upon his death in A.D. 65. Although the work has been generally known through most of history as the "Pharsalia", modern scholarship tends to agree that this was not Lucan's choice for a title. English translation by Sir Edward Ridley, 1896. The text of this edition is based on that published as "The Pharsalia of Lucan", as translated by Sir Edward Ridley (Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1896). This edition is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited, proofed, and prepared by Douglas B. Killings (DeTroyes@AOL.COM), May 1996. Preparer's Notes
CONTENTS PREPARER'S NOTES: Lucan's "Pharsalia" (or, "Civil War", as many scholars now prefer to call it) was written approximately a century after the events it chronicles took place.

Welcome! The Lucan Area Heritage, a non-profit organization, was formed in the April 1995, and got its start in the old Ford Dealership Building on Main Street, Lucan, Ontario, in Hank Arnold's show-room. We gathered historical artifacts and displayed them every Saturday afternoon for public viewing. Our first big fund raiser was selling Cash Calendars with a prize drawn every day of the year. In two years, we had a profit of about $25,000.00. Other fundraisers include: Ride Back in Time, Heritage Dinners, Heritage Festivals, Bus Tours, selling scrap metal, and awesome auction sales, and of course, many private donations. In the fall of 1998, we purchased a lot with a two-car garage from Dr. Lock, and by February 1999, we had it and our log cabin in good enough shape to move in. Our Museum Display Includes: History of 12 original schoolhouses, 2 central schools,
    Several family histories
    Histories of sports
    Women's Institute scrap books

In January [1846] Parliament in London repealed the duties on the importation of foreign corn, the ' corn laws ', and an attempt was made to replace the potato by supplies of Indian corn, unknown as a food in the United Kingdom. A start was made too towards establishing a system of public works to provide the people with money with which food might be purchased, since wages in Ireland were almost unknown. It was at this juncture that the Duke of Norfolk suggested that the Irish should substitute curry powder for the potato and nourish themselves on curry powder mixed with water. Nevertheless, hope ran high in 1846: the Irish had a tradition that when the potato crop failed next year's crop was exceptionally abundant. The growing of crops other than potatoes was not attempted, because the people had no implements, no seeds and no knowledge of how to cultivate anything else. Once again almost all Ireland became a potato-field.

Lucan house at 46 Lower Belgrave Street Something was amiss on the evening of Thursday, November 7, 1974, at the imposing, six-story brick house at 46 Lower Belgrave Street, one of London’s most fashionable neighborhoods. At about 8:55 p.m., 29-year-old nanny Sandra Rivett went downstairs to the basement kitchen to make some tea for her employer, Countess Veronica Lucan, wife of the Seventh Earl of Lucan. About 15 minutes later when Sandra had not returned, Lady Lucan became concerned. She left her three children upstairs and went down to the main level to look for Sandra. The six stories of the house included a basement, where the breakfast room and kitchen were located. The ground floor held the dining and living areas of the house, as well as a cloakroom. Above the main level were four more upper floors with various other rooms, most of which were bedrooms.

    The Deputy Leader Apprentice
Tonight is Wednesday and there is no Party Animals all that appears to be watchable tonight is the cricket in the Sports but I fear that will be overtaken by the football (England - Andorra 0). Then this morning whilst half awake listening to Today a trailer comes on for The Apprentice and cue the catchphrases; contestants saying " I'm driven, motivated and I know I can do this and I will destroy anyone who get's in my way ". Sir Alan " You are a load of crap. You're fired ". Annoying bloke in background " The Search for Sir Alan's Apprentice is on ". Now having watched previous series and worried that the contestants really might be the best British industry has to offer I am going to give it a miss and watch tonight's goalless draw. However, an idea has occured to me. Once Gordon has realised his destiny and become leader then the search for his apprentice can begin. All the deputy leadership candidates can be divided into two teams and given snappy names such as Dynamo and Polynix. Each week Gordon sets the two teams a task. "

In 60 CE at a festival in Emperor Nero's honour Lucan praised him in a panegyric and was promoted to one or two minor offices. But having defeated Nero in a poetry contest he was interdicted from further recitals or publication, so that three books of his epic The Civil War were probably not issued in 61 when they were finished. By 65 he was composing the tenth book but then became involved in the unsuccessful plot of Piso against Nero and, aged only twenty-six, by order took his own life. Pharsalia. 18. Lucan/Civil Wars/Introduction
It seems superfluous to write an introduction to lucan s Pharsalia (or Bellum Civile), especially since any reliable translation would already have one.
    http://alamo.nmsu.edu/~jhaley/intro.htm
INTRODUCTION It seems superfluous to write an introduction to Lucan's Pharsalia (or Bellum Civile ), especially since any reliable translation would already have one. Yet, it is precisely because I am using a specific translation (Susan Braund's) that I have felt it necessary, for, undoubtedly, my reading of the text is influenced by the translator's selection and juxtapositioning of words. In short, my interpretation of Lucan is not entirely my interpretation. It is, therefore, my hope that, by prefacing these commentaries with an introduction, I can reduce the likelihood of my misleading the reader. That said, I would like to begin with a few historical comments on the poet and his life.
Marcus Annaeus Lucanus (Lucan) was born into a prominent family in Roman Spain in the year 39 A.D. Before his first birthday, however, the family moved to the capital, and this proved to be beneficial for Lucan, since it was here in Rome that he received his educationan education which placed great emphasis on literature and rhetoric. He later moved to Athens to finish his studies but was recalled to Rome by the young emperor Nero. The origin of their friendship is unclear, but, since Nero was a patron of the arts, it would be reasonable to assume that the two men had mutual interests and that those interests fostered a certain respect and trust. Indeed, it is known that Lucan held the quaestorship under Nero.
These were productive years for Lucan. It was during this period that he wrote a
