He also served as associate director of the Goodman Theater in Chicago in 1978 and 1979. Although his career as a playwright originated in Chicago’s regional theaters, many of Mamet’s strongest influences came from his early training on the East Coast, especially his work with American acting teacher Sanford Meisner at Meisner’s Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. Îí ðîäèëñÿ â ×èêàãî 30 íîÿáðÿ 1947 ãîäà. Îáðàçîâàíèå ïîëó÷èë ñíà÷àëà â îääàðäñêîì êîëëåäæå Âåðìîíòà, à çàòåì â îäíîé èç òåàòðàëüíûõ øêîë Íüþ-Éîðêà. Âåðíóëñÿ â ñâîé ðîäíîé ãîðîä, ÷òîáû îñíîâàòü òåàòðàëüíóþ êîìïàíèþ Ñâÿòîãî Íèêîëàñà è íåêîòîðîå âðåìÿ ðàáîòàë õóäîæåñòâåííûì ðóêîâîäèòåëåì èçâåñòíîãî òåàòðà óäìåíà. Âïåðâûå Ìýìåò ïîëó÷èë ïðèçíàíèå â 1976 ãîäó çà òðè áðîäâåéñêèå ïüåñû «The Duck Variations», «Sexual Perversity in Chicago» è «America Buffalo». Ïîñëåäíèå äâå ðàáîòû ïîçäíåå áûëè àäàïòèðîâàíû äëÿ ýêðàíà. Ïèñàòü äëÿ ýêðàíà Ìýìåò íà÷àë â 1981 ãîäó è íà÷àë îí ñ ðèìåéêà «Ïî÷òàëüîí âñåãäà çâîíèò äâàæäû». Çà ïüåñó «ëåíãàðè ëåí Ðîñ» Ìýìåò ïîëó÷èë ïðåìèþ Ïóëèòöåðà â 1984, à â 1992 ïî ýòîé ïüåñå áûë ïîñòàâëåí ôèëüì ïî ñöåíàðèþ Ìýìåòà (â ðîññèéñêîì ïðîêàòå – «Àìåðèêàíöû»). Ïðèçíàíèå â êà÷åñòâå ñöåíàðèñòà ïðèøëî ê Ìýìåòó ïîñëå âûõîäà «Íåïðèêàñàåìûõ» (1987) Áðàéàíà äå Ïàëìû.  ýòîì æå ãîäó îí áûë ïðèçíàí è êàê ðåæèññåð, åãî äåáþòíîé ëåíòîé áûëà êàðòèíà «House of Games», ãëàâíóþ ðîëü â ýòîì êðèìèíàëüíîì òðèëëåðå ñûãðàëà áóäóùàÿ æåíà Ìýìåòà Ëèíäñåé Êðóç. Ïîñëå ðåæèññåðñêîé ðàáîòû åùå íàä äâóìÿ êàðòèíàìè («Things change» è «Homicide») Ìýìåò âåðíóëñÿ ê ñöåíàðíîé ðàáîòå.  1997 çà íàïèñàíèå ñöåíàðèÿ ê ôèëüìó «Ïëóòîâñòâî» Ìýìåò áûë íîìèíèðîâàí íà «Îñêàð» è «Çîëîòîé ãëîáóñ».  ýòîì ãîäó îí ñíîâà âçÿëñÿ ðåæèññåðñêóþ ðàáîòó è ñíÿë «Èñïàíñêèé óçíèê» ñî Ñòèâîì Ìàðòèíîì â ãëàâíîé ðîëè. Ïîñëå íàïèñàíèÿ íå î÷åíü óñïåøíîãî ñöåíàðèÿ ê ôèëüìó «Íà ãðàíè» (1997) Ìýìåò âåðíóëñÿ íà ýêðàí â 1999 ñ êàðòèíîé «The Winslow Boy», êîòîðàÿ áûëà ïðåêðàñíî âîñïðèíÿòà êðèòèêàìè. Åãî ñëåäóþùàÿ êàðòèíà «State and Main» íå îïðàâäàëà îæèäàíèé, çàòî ñëåäóþùèé ñöåíàðèé («àííèáàë») ÿâèëñÿ õèòîì áîêñîôèñà.  ñëåäóþùåì ãîäó Ìýìåò ñíîâà ñàäèòñÿ â ðåæèññåðñêîå êðåñëî è ñíèìàåò êðèìèíàëüíóþ äðàìó «Îãðàáëåíèå», êîòîðàÿ èìåëà óìåðåííûé óñïåõ.
