Marvell, Andrew Marvell, Andrew (1621-1678), English poet and satirist, one of the Metaphysical poets. He was born in Winestead, Yorkshire, and educated at Hull Grammar School and at the University of Cambridge. His early publications link him with royalists such as the poet Richard Lovelace, but he was tutor to the daughter of the parliamentary general Lord Fairfax from 1650 to 1652, and assistant to John Milton as Latin Secretary to the Commonwealth’s Council of State from 1657 to 1659. He is thought to have played a part in saving the life of Milton, a staunch republican, after the Restoration. He became Member of Parliament for Hull in 1659 and his correspondence remains a valuable source of information on the period while also demonstrating his energy as a working politician. His possible marriage to Mary Palmer remains much in doubt. Marvell’s epitaph in St Giles, London, marks him as a man of “wit and learning, with a singular penetration, and strength of judgment”. It seems appropriate for the poetry by which he is now known, but in his own day he was thought of as a politician and satirist. Recent critical work suggest his importance as an anonymous voice of opposition satire, including “The Last Instructions to a Painter” (1667), yet in much of the poetry, both lyric and overtly political, allusive ambiguity makes difficult any neat interpretation. “An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell’s Return from Ireland” (1650) is recognized as one of Marvell’s great political poems, but also as one of his most enigmatic works. Ostensibly concerned with the return of Oliver Cromwell, the poem contains at its centre a long and possibly sympathetic account of the departing king, Charles I. Though his prose works are now little read, his contemporaries valued his satires for their wit.

    Andrew Marvell (1621- 78)
Andrew Marvell was raised in Hull and served as a member of Parliament for the city for twenty years. Despite prudently choosing to spend the English Civil War on the continent Marvell, like his friend Milton, was an active supporter of the Commonwealth; he served as an unofficial laureate to Cromwell and tutored the offspring of many leading parliamentarians, including the Protector's ward. Some of his best verse is political in theme; after the Restoration he became famed for his witty, ironic, urbane satires, which were published anonymously.
In Last Instructions to a Painter he attacked the sexual and financial impropriety of the Stuart court and his Account of the Growth of Popery and Arbitrary Government in England caused the London Gazette to offer a reward for information about the identity of its author.

John Milton, the English poet, was born in Bread Street, Cheapside, London, on the 9th of December 1608. ... Again and again Milton speaks with gratitude and affection of the ungrudging pains bestowed by his father on his early education. http://www.nndb.com/people/017/000084762/ John Milton (1608-1674) was born in London and educated at Cambridge. He was deeply learned in scripture and theology and wrote religious and political pamphlets as well as his religious poetry, the most famous of which is Paradise Lost. He worked as Foreign Secretary in Olive Cromwell's government and was very antagonistic to the Catholic Church. He went blind in 1652 (see poem below) but continued writing by dictating to friends and family. He saw it as his mission to "justify the ways of God to men", but his image of God can be aloof and severe. Click here for a more detailed account of Milton's life and work.

Born: March 31, 1621, in Winestead, Yorkshire, England
Died: August 16, 1678, in London, England
Andrew Marvell was the son of Reverend Andrew Marvell, an Anglican clergyman. His father was also a lecturer at the Holy Trinity Church and later the master of the Hull Grammar School. Young Marvell was educated at Hull before entering Trinity College at Cambridge in 1633. He began to write satire while attending University. After graduating in 1638, Marvell remained at Cambridge as a fellow. He was influenced at this time by Roman Catholics who protested against the existing religious environment. In 1641, Marvell's father died. Andrew used his inheritance to tour Europe. At this point England was on the verge of a civil war and when Marvell returned he took the side of Cromwell. From 1650 to 1652 Andrew Marvell was at tutor for Lord Fairfax and it was during this period that his best poetry emerged.
