    Menander
    MenanderAfter the Macedonian conquest, Greek comedy moved away from the daring personal and political satire of Aristophanes. Lacking complete political independance, writers of this New Comedy found themselves moving towards safer more mundane subject matter. They found their inspiration in the daily life of Athens. Their characters were drawn from the cooks, merchants, farmers and slaves of the city. According to ancient report, the most gifted of these new writers was Menander. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.poems.com.np%2Fbiography-of-poets%2Fmenander%2F'; addthis_title = 'Menander'; addthis_pub = 'thapame';

    Description South of Nuovi Scavi is the large and well-preserved House of Menander which belonged to a wealthy merchant; it was named after a likeness of the Greek comic playwright Menander in a niche in the magnificent peristylium. Adjoining this is the charming little House of the Lovers.
    Farther along the Via dell'Abbondanza, on the left, is the Thermopolium, a tavern fully equipped with drinking vessels, a kettle, a stove and a lamp, with the last customer's money still on the counter. Beyond this, on the left, is the interesting House of Trebius Valens, the front wall of which is covered with inscriptions; and beyond this again, on the right, is the rich House of Marcus Loreius Tiburtinus, with a restored double door and an interesting interior.

    created by Gone Jackal person ) by Gone Jackal (1.2 wk) print C! I like it! Mon Nov 27 2000 at 4:39:04 Writer of new comedy , ca. 344-292 B.C. , a contemporary of Demosthenes , who made his theatrical debut around 324/3. Most of his work exists only in fragment s, and much of the fun in reading his Greek is in trying to reconstruct the text. Though probably less succesful than other writers of the time, his work gives us our best example of the new comedy, a strong deviation from the old comedy of Aristophanes . Most of his plays involve stock character s in domestic disputes . The humour is often subtle and refined , with none of the crass blatant slapstick of his predecessors; a prime example is his Dyskolus ('the grouch '), in which a foppish young city boy tries to win the heart of the daughter of an antisocial old farmer . He tries to convince the man that he's not so bad after all by taking to farmwork, digging ditches in a great scene wherein he bitch es about his poor back and blister ed hands in perfect metre; he wins the girl by saving her father when he falls down a well . The language of the plays is artificial and metrical iambic trimeter ), but reflects more of the spoken word than most others before him.

    Description
    • The first comprehensive study of Menander Rhetor The most detailed study to date of later Greek rhetoric Emphasizes the social and educational (as well as the technical and theoretical) dimensions of rhetoric
    This book undertakes a fundamental assessment of Menander of Laodicea ('Menander Rhetor'), and of the nature and functions of rhetoric in later antiquity (second to fifth centuries AD). It examines Menander's fragments, collected here for the first time, in detail, showing that he was primarily an expert on judicial and deliberative oratory; a source-critical analysis of the Demosthenes scholia shows that his influential commentary on Demosthenes can be partially reconstructed. It explores the educational practices of the rhetorical schools, and shows that the skills which they taught still had a direct application in the subsequent careers of the rhetoricians' pupils.

    Menander is the only Yavana (person of Greek origin in Indian language) king who has become celebrated in ancient Indian literature. He is known as `Milinda' who had his capital at Sakala (modern Sialkot in Pakistan, Euthymedia in Greek). He one of the two leading characters of a Pali (ancient language of India) treatise Milindpanha (Questions of Milinda). This book describes fundamental principles of Buddhist philosophy which is narrated in form of a dialogue between King Milinda and Buddhist scholar Nagasena. Thus Menander is well known for Indian historians as a philosopher with superior knowledge in various schools of thought and not as a mighty conqueror. He was born at Charikar, a country between Kabul and Panjshir rivers, a connecting link between Bactria and India. Source: med.unc.edu
