30 views For at least the last five or six minutes of this reading, I was stifling an enormous sneeze, which came out promptly the second I rushed to stop recording (there may or may not have left physical evidence of the sneeze s disdain for having been ignored for so long but I d never tell). Oddly, I hadn t given thought to the end of the story, and, for reasons better understood if you listen all through, by the end was stifling a laugh on top of the sneeze, and am presently thankful that I did not explode altogether from all these stifled physiological demands. Thankful, of course, that my atoms remained together long enough, at least, to post the story. also in: education arts literature mishima ... yukio

Mishima was the modern Japanese author who, until the arrival of Murakami Haruki and Yoshimoto Banana, had won the largest readership outside of Japan, at least in part because of the dramatic way he ended his life. A versatile and prolific writer as well as an astute critic (some would rate his criticism higher than his fiction), Mishima seems assured of a reputation as one of Japan's most important postwar writers. Mishima was born in Tokyo as Hiraoka Kimitake. His father, Azusa, was an official in the Ministry of Agriculture; his mother Shizue was the second daughter of a former principal of Kaisei Middle School, Hashi Kenzō. The influence of Mishima's autocratic grandmother, Natsu " who had Mishima live in her room and forbade him to play with other boys " is frequently cited by biographers as the source of Mishima's later deviation from normality. Donald Keene and others, however, also point out rightly that she helped Mishima develop his precocious taste in literature. Throughout his youth Mishima attended the Gakushūin (Peers School), serializing his first important prose work

Home Author A B C ... Links Mishima Yukio 1925-70, Japanese author [A]t no time are we ever in such complete possession of a journey, down to its last nook and cranny, as when we are busy with preparations for it. After that, there remains only the journey itself, which is nothing but the process by which we lose our ownership of it. This is what makes travel so utterly fruitless. From the moment that a man no longer responds in the slightest to the motives that regulate the material world, that world appears to be at complete repose. [Death in Midsummer and Other Stories, 'The Priest of Shiga Temple and His Love'] If we value so highly the dignity of life, how van we not also value the dignity of death? No death may be called futile. [How to Read Hagakure] Literary art takes its materials from life, but although life is thus the mother of literature, it is also her better enemy: although life is inherent in the author himself, it is also the eternal antithesis of art. [Hagakure and I] Ours is an age in which everything is based on the premise that it is best to live as long as possible. The average life span has become the longest in history, and a monotonous plan for humanity unrolls before us. [Hagakure is Alive Today] The sound of the rain is like the voices of tens of thousands of monks reading sutras. . . . No-one's words can compete with this mercilessly powerful rain. The only thing that can compete with the sound of this rain, that can smash this deathlike wall of sound, is the shout of a man who refuses to stoop to this chatter, the shout of a simple spirit that knows no words. [Thirst for Love]

Early life
Mishima's early childhood was greatly influenced by his grandmother, Natsu. She separated Mishima from his family and raised him virtually as her own until he was 12. She was sick with sciatica yet controlled much of his upbringing and limited his interactions with his siblings and parents. She encouraged his interest in Kabuki theatre and entertained him with fairy tales and other fantastic stories. She also fostered in Mishima a yearning for a familial grandeur that had ostensibly been lost. Mishima spent much of his childhood shut indoors, playing with dolls or making origami creatures with his three female cousins. He cared for his Grandmother more frequently as her health worsened, and developed a precocious interest in books.

U... Editura
