A way of rediscovering the language of innocence, a renewal of the primordial pact, poetry is the basic text, the foundation of the human order. Paz founded an avant-garde literary journal when he was 17 and published his first book of poetry, Luna Silvestre (Wild Moon, 1933), at the age of 19. As Paz’s poetry style developed, he addressed a variety of themes. His early work contained themes of sensuality and beauty, and it explored an individual’s communication with the world. In his later poetry, Paz poses questions concerning the human condition in an individual as well as social context. He also explored these issues in his essays. Paz was deeply committed to social reform and spent 1936 to 1939 in Spain, where he was a staunch supporter of the Loyalists during the Spanish Civil War. In Mexico from 1939 to 1943, he wrote for a labour-supported newspaper, but he broke with the Communist party after the German-Soviet pact in World War II and gave up most political activity. In 1944 Paz visited the United States as the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship. He then joined the Mexican diplomatic corps and worked in the corps from 1945 to 1968, and served in France, Switzerland, Japan, and India. In 1968, Paz resigned as ambassador to India to protest against the government massacre of student demonstrators at the Plaza of Three Cultures in Mexico City.
