LUIGI PIRANDELLO QUOTES We think we understand each other, but we never really do. LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Six Characters in Search of an Author Woe to him who doesn't know how to wear his mask, be he king or pope! LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Henry IV I hate symbolic art in which the presentation loses all spontaneous movement in order to become a machine, an allegory a vain and misconceived effort because the very fact of giving an allegorical sense to a presentation clearly shows that we have to do with a fable which by itself has no truth either fantastic or direct; it was made for the demonstration of some moral truth. LUIGI PIRANDELLO, preface, Six Characters in Search of an Author Personally, I don't give a rap for documents; for the truth in my eyes is not in them but in the mind. LUIGI PIRANDELLO, It Is So! (If You Think So) As soon as one is born, one starts dying. LUIGI PIRANDELLO, Henry IV Here is a piece of earth. If you stand staring at it and doing nothing, what does the earth yield? Nothing. Just like a woman. LUIGI PIRANDELLO

He was born in a village with the curious name of Chaos (Xaos), a poor suburb of Girgenti (Agrigento, a poor town of southern Sicily), from a middle-class family.
He is known mainly for his writing of theatre, but his short stories and novels took up most of his career. He in fact also wrote some delicious novels in which he described his thoughts, often following Sicilian legends, or Italian little facts. Pirandello composed over 350 short stories, generally on realistic themes of Italian and Sicilian life. His poetry is rather less considered.
As in his works, nothing seems to have happened by casualty in his life. His family's sulphur mine was flooded and ruined while he was young, leading family to difficult conditions.
His wife Antonietta soon revealed suffering heavy mental diseases, and this gave Pirandello a deep acknowledgement of mental mechanisms, which he often referred to in his works (notably in Enrico IV (Henry IV)). In Il berretto a sonagli (Cap and Bells), he described in detail how to "become mad": to tell everyone the truth, the sole and cruel truth, regardless of manners or respect and in spite of social habits, soon will produce isolation and a reputation of mad.
Pirandello's best-known work is probably Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore (Six Characters in Search of an Author). Equally notable, if not as often performed, are the plays Così è (se vi pare) (Right You Are (If You Think You Are)) and Ciascuno a suo modo (Each in His Own Way). Another play, Come tu mi vuoi (As You Desire Me), was adapted for a 1932 Hollywood film starring Greta Garbo.

Pirandello, Luigi Pirandello, Luigi (1867-1936), Italian writer and Nobel laureate, who is considered the most important Italian dramatist of the period between the two world wars. Pirandello was born on June 28, 1867, in Agrigento, Sicily, and educated at the universities of Rome and Bonn. Pirandello died on December 10, 1936, in Rome. Pirandello's writings, of which his plays are the most outstanding, deal mainly with people of the lower middle class, such as teachers, boardinghouse proprietors, and clerks. He is concerned with philosophic ideas, such as that humans, because of the conflict within them between instinct and reason, are doomed to an existence full of grotesque inconsistencies; that specific actions are not right or wrong in themselves, but only in the way we regard them; and that an individual has not one definite personality but many, depending on how that person appears to the people with whom he or she comes in contact. Without faith in any fixed standards of ethics, morality, politics, or religion, characters in Pirandello's tales and plays find reality only in themselves, and then discover that they themselves are unstable and inexplicable phenomena.

La filosofia pirandelliana trova qui il suo totale compimento attraverso il protagonista, il "pazzo" Vitangelo Moscarda, che assorbe in sé e supera tutti i personaggi presenti nelle opere precedenti dello scrittore siciliano.
