How he proves the theorem in the sixth book will be evident there. But now let us consider how he shows the theorem before us to be true, remarking only that he does not prove the universal proposition here, since he has not yet explained similarity in rectilinear figures, nor proved anything in general about proportion. Hence many of the things here proved in a partial fashion are proved in that book more generally through the use of the above method. In the present proposition the author of the Elements proves his conclusion by means of the ordinary theory of parallelograms.
There are two sorts of right-angled triangles, isosceles and scalene. In isosceles triangles you cannot find numbers that fit the sides; for there is no square number that is de double of a square number, if you ignore approximations, such as the square of seven which lacks one of being double the square of five. But in scalene triangles it is possible to find such numbers, and it has been clearly shown that the square on the side subtending the right angle may be equal to the squares on the sides containing it. Such is the triangle in the republic, in which sides of three and four contain the right angle and five subtends it, so that the square on five is equal to the squares on those sides. For this is twenty-five, and of those the square of three is nine and that of four sixteen. The statement, then, is clear for numbers.

    Proclus Lycaeus Diadochus
Proclus Lycaeus (February 8, 412 – April 17, 487), surnamed "The Successor" (Greek Πρόκλος ὁ Διάδοχος Próklos ho Diádokhos), was a Greek Neoplatonist philosopher.
Born to a rich family in Constantinople, he studied rhetoric, philosophy and mathematics in Alexandria of Egypt. He came back to Constantinopole and was a successful lawyer for a short time. However as he preferred philosophy, he went to Athens in 431 to study at the famous Academy which was founded 800 years before by Plato . He lived in Athens until the end of his life, except for a one year exile due to his political-philosophical activity which was not tolerated by the Christian regime. He became head master of Athens' School of Philosophy.
His work can be divided in two parts. In the first part are his Memorandi on Plato's works, the first written when he was 28 years old: The Memorandum on Timaeus, on Plato's Republic , on Plato's Alcibiades , on Plato's Parmenides and on Plato's Cratylus. In these works, Proclus analyzes and restates Plato's thought - much misinterpreted and distorted at the time.

      Proclus
Proclus u s) [ key , Neoplatonic philosopher, b. Constantinople. He studied at Alexandria and at Athens, where he was a pupil of the Platonist Syrianus, whom he succeeded as a teacher. As a partisan of paganism he was forced to leave Athens, but he returned at the end of a year. A synthesizer of Neoplatonic doctrines, Proclus gave the philosophy its most systematic form. He kept the elements of Plotinus, but introduced a principle of triadic development in the series of emanations; the three stages are an original, an emergence from the original, and a return in a lower form to the original. Proclus differed from Plotinus in regard to the origin of matter, which he held to emerge from the first emanation rather than from the plastic forces. Among his writings are commentaries on several Platonic dialogues and two treatises

St. Proclus, the Archbishop of Constantinople Last Sunday we meditated upon the life of the great luminary of the Church, St. John Chrysostom. Today, December 3 (which is November 20 on the Julian Calendar) we celebrate the memory of his disciple, St. Proclus, who received consecration to the diaconate and priesthood from his hands. Like his master and friend, Proclus was devoted to the study of Holy Scripture. From him he learned how to proclaim his insights with clarity and conviction. So well did Proclus express this teaching that his sermon was accepted as the introduction to the Acts of the Council of Ephesus, and he was soon elevated to the dignity of Patriarch which he held with honour until his repose. By his efforts the relics of his teacher, St. John Chrysostom, were returned to Constantinople. Home Articles Prayer Saints ... About Us
