Quintilian’s Institutio Oratoria (XI.III)—roughly 95 AD
Questions to consider: What are the effects or exclusions of norms of delivery? Which bodies matter? If, according to Aristotle and much of the history of rhetoric, appearance and delivery are subjugated as a less “elevated” (poetic and rhetorical rather than philosophical) subject of inquiry, why are those two concepts seemingly so influential? Why is the study of delivery and delivery itself so important? What is the relationship between appearance and delivery? What are the connections between rhetoric as civic action (Atwell) and norms of delivery? What constitutes textual delivery? In terms of delivery, I am interested in the reification of and prescriptions for “the rhetor” or “the perfect orator” and how these texts have contributed to that construction. Both Rhetorica Ad Herrenium and Institutes of Oratory set forth very prescriptive forms of deportment, countenance, and appearance. Whereas Aristotle devotes much less serious consideration to delivery, Cicero treats delivery more emphatically but does not systematize it. In this essay, I want to explore these questions: based on these texts, what constitutes rhetorical norms of delivery? What are the foundational theories of rhetorical delivery? What are the ordinary guidelines? In other words, what are the normative patterns of delivery related to the body—comportment, appearance, movement, speech, hearing, seeing, and the like? I want to explore thow these texts construct a notion of rhetorical fitness (Dolmage).

Few scholars will nowadays underestimate the importance of Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria . This monumental work has given rise to innumerable monographs and articles, it serves as an inexhaustible source of authoritative quotes and thanks to D.A. Russell's excellent annotated Loeb translation (2001) has finally become accessible for a broader public. It is all the more astounding, therefore, that only a few of its twelve books have been provided with commentaries. The most recent and easily the most thorough of these is the commentary on Book 2 by Michael Winterbottom and Tobias Reinhardt (hereafter W and R). Book 2 occupies a special position within the Institutio. Its first half is a continuation of Book 1. Treating of secondary and higher education, it covers the following subjects: the different territories of grammaticus and rhetor (2.1); the importance of choosing a teacher who can boast both moral and intellectual excellence (2.2 and 2.3);

    Reading Response: Aristotle, Plato, and Quintilian I had a difficult time with these readings, so please leave a comment if you think I'm off base or missed an important point. It was tough to conflate them all . . .
    In both Ion and The Republic , Plato presents poetry as a danger. In the latter, it is said to have the power to corrupt, leading people to sympathize with feelings and actions of others that they would find undesirable in themselves. The poet is spellbinding, and Ion further illustrates the power of language: Ion is spellbound by Homer, who is in turn transfixed by his muse, who draws the ability to inspire from the gods. Plato compares this process of creation to a chain where each link is inspired by and held to something that came before.
    Similarly, in his Institutes of Oratory , Quintilian instructs aspiring orators to study the masters that came before, prescribing a specific brand of imitation as a basis for creating something new. His approach is less like the philosophical approach of Plato and more like the pragmatic observations of Aristotle in his Poetics

    Quintilian
    Quintilian, a Roman teacher of the first century A.D. His Latin name was Marcus Fabius Quintilianus. His 12-volume Institutio Oratoria gives a complete account of the Roman citizen's education in law, oratory, literature, and grammar. It is especially remarkable for the simplicity of its approach, in contrast to the florid style popular in his time. His work was the basis for Latin rhetoric for centuries, and was much admired during the Renaissance. Quintilian was born in Spain. He became a teacher of oratory in Rome about 68 A.D. The emperor Domitian is said to have given him the rank of consul. Related Topics Plautus Pliny Lucius Annaeus Seneca

He taught rhetoric at Rome (Pliny the Younger and possibly Tacitus were among his pupils) and, as a public teacher, was endowed with a salary by Vespasian, who also made him consul. His Institutio oratoria, a complete survey of rhetoric in 12 books, begins with a discussion of the education of the young and proceeds with the various principles of rhetoric. Bill Long 12/03/04 Sorting out Some Terms "Reality is a cliche from which we escape by metaphor"WALLACE STEVENS One of the reasons that literary criticism never appealed to me is as an academic discipline that I quickly became confused by all the verbiage of the critics and didn't understand what they were saying. Perhaps I was immature at the time, however, and didn't have the self-confidence to ask them what they meant by their terms. Perhaps I wasn't able or willing to hold them down until they had actually made themselves clear. But, in any case, I find myself returning to literary/rhetorical terms much later in life, with a desire to try to sort out what is meant by metaphor, metonomy, metalepsis, irony, synecdoche and other words. What you find, at first glance, is that no one seems to know what any of the terms mean with any precision. The purpose of this and the next mini-essay is to try to massage these terms, especially with the help of Puttenham, to see if we can come up with a satisfactory language to describe some of the wonderful ways that we might use language.
