Walter Raleigh (c.1552 - 1618)
Raleigh was an adventurer, courtier to Elizabeth I, navigator, author and poet. M Walter Raleigh (also spelt Ralegh) was born into a well-connected gentry family at Hayes Barton in Devon in around 1552. He attended Oxford University for a time, fought with the Huguenots in France and later studied law in London. In 1578 Raleigh sailed to America with explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert, his half brother. This expedition may have stimulated his plan to found a colony there. In 1585, he sponsored the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island (now North Carolina). The colony failed and another attempt at colonisation also failed in 1587. Raleigh has been credited with bringing potatoes and tobacco back to Britain, although both of these were already known via the Spanish. However, Raleigh did help to make smoking popular at court. Raleigh first came to the attention of Queen Elizabeth I in 1580, when he went to Ireland to help suppress an uprising in Munster. He soon became a favourite of the queen, and was knighted and appointed captain of the Queen's Guard (1587). He became an MP in 1584 and received extensive estates in Ireland.

English Adventurer, Courtier, Navigator and Explorer
Born: 1554
Died: 1618
Walter Raleigh was educated at Oxford and studied law in London. He fought the French religious wars on the side of the Huguenots and in England’s war against the Irish. In 1573 and in 1583he embarked with his half-brother Humphrey Gilbert in an attempt to sail to the newfound Americas, but he did not succeed in reaching the continent.
Raleigh obtained a patent for founding a North American colony in 1584 and immediately sent out a reconnaissance expedition under the command of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe. This expedition explored an island, apparently called Windgandcon by the local Native Americans (present day Roanoke, North Carolina) and returned with a cargo of Tobacco and potatoes. Raleigh named the entire area Virginia, in honor of Queen Elizabeth. He subsequently became a favorite of the Queen and received many honors in return for his efforts, including a knighthood in 1585.
That year, Raleigh sent out an expedition under the command of Richard Grenville to establish a settlement on the site he had been permitted to colonize. Within a year the colony had failed and was evacuated by a force led by Sir Francis Drake. A skeleton force was left behind to guard the fort, but Algonquin Indians later wiped out the entire garrison.

Sir Walter Raleigh
Walter Raleigh was born in Devon, the son of a gentleman. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford and the Middle Temple. As a soldier and explorer of the New World, he won the favour of Queen Elizabeth I, receiving a knighthood in 1584, but fell from grace following his love affair and marriage to one of her attendants. After the Queen's death he fared even worse, as jealous nobles conspired against him to bring about his downfall and subsequent execution on charges of treason. Much of Raleigh's work was written during his long imprisonment in the Tower of London and his most famous poems include All the World's a Stage Cynthia, the Lady of the Sea , in praise of Queen Elizabeth I, The Lie , and The Pilgrimage . His prose works include accounts of his voyages and expeditions and an unfinished History of the World The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd

    SIR WALTER RALEIGH
By Katherine Sir Walter Raleigh was a brave explorer. He was mainly famous for trying to start colonies. Sir Walter Raleigh had a interesting early life. He was born October 29,1618, in Devon, England. He had a half brother named Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a full brother named Carew Raleigh. He attended Oxford University for a time. He fought with the Huguenots in France, and later studied law. Raleigh was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth. She first noticed him in 1580 when he went to Ireland to help put down a rebellion. He was knighted for this and became head of the queen’s guard. One story credits him with planting the first potato in Ireland, however it was far more likely that the potato plant arrived in Ireland through trade with the Spanish. In 1592 the Queen got angry when she discovered Raleigh’s secretly married her maid of honor. This made the Queen mad and jealous. Raleigh and his wife were imprisoned in a tower. In 1578 he sailed to America with his half brother. This expedition may have given him the idea to found a colony there. In 1585 he started the first English colony in America on Roanoke Island(now North Carolina). This settlement was forced to abandon the island for a lot of reason. Most of the men were not good farmers or gardeners. The soil on the island was very sandy, dry and infertile and the settlers real motivation to travel to America was to seek fortune in gold or other precious items. When it was obvious that this was not going to happen they wanted to leave. In 1587 Raleigh attempted a second expedition again establishing a settlement on Roanoke Island. This time, more of a range of people went, including some whole families under the governance of John White.

English 1006S April 16, 2007 The story that I chose to read after Young Goodman Brown and A Rose for Emily was Edgar Allan Poe’s, The Masque of the Red Death , written in 1842. The biggest difference in how I read this story just a few minutes ago and how I might have read it before I took this course was that as I read it, I was consciously aware of the ‘voice’ or ‘teller.’ Being aware of the ‘teller’ changes the way that I read stories because it makes me aware of the fact that the author is manipulating the information that I’m are being given. It’s obvious, once you recognize the presence of the teller that the author must have chosen this voice for a reason. When you understand what makes the teller’s point of view unique, you understand why the author chose to use that voice, what effect or information that this specific teller gives you that none other could. For example, the teller in my story is omniscient. The voice knows things that have happened in the past and things that will take place in the future but mostly, the teller limits himself to what he sees. They story has almost no narrative and the teller is really just describing what he sees.
