[Horne Introduction]
The Music of Love Hail to thee, then, O Love, sweet madness!
Thou who healest all our infirmities!
Who art the Physician of our pride and self-conceit!
Who art our Plato and our Galen!
Love exalts our earthly bodies to heaven,
And makes the very hills to dance with joy!
O lover, 'twas Love that gave life to Mount Sinai,
When "it quaked, and Moses fell down in a swoon." Did my Beloved only touch me with His lips, I too, like a flute, would burst out into melody. The Beloved When the rose has faded and the garden is withered, The song of the nightingale is no longer to be heard. The Beloved is all in all, the lover only veils Him; The Beloved is all that lives, the lover a dead thing. When the lover feels no longer love's quickening, He becomes like a bird who has lost its wings. Alas! How can I retain my senses about me

Mevlana Rumi (1207-1273). This philosopher and mystic of Islam addressed all people, regardless of their faith or ethnic origin.
Mevlana's original Sufi philosophy and importance surpass national and ethnic borders. He advocated unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. When Mevlana Rumi died, for the first and only time known in world history, Moslems, Jews and Christians quarreled about the honour to carry him to his grave.

Rumi
The name Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi stands for Love and ecstatic flight into the infinite. Rumi is one of the great spiritual masters and poetical geniuses of mankind and was the founder of the Mevlevi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam. Rumi was born on 30 September 1207 in Balkh in present day Afghanistan to a family of learned theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. When his father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi 24 years old, was an already accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences. The mevlevi brotherhood is founded completely on love and tolerance. He died on 17 December 1273 in Konya in present day Turkey . He was laid to rest beside his father and over his remains a splendid shrine was erected. This conference examines the poetry and philosophy of Rumi, the 13th-century Muslim poet, philosopher, and mystic, and its relevance to contemporary understandings of Islamic culture. It also deals with a renewed interest in Rumi's writings in recent years throughout the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. The starting point of the conference is Rumi's well-known verse "come, come again, whoever you are, come!" Rumi's eloquent and humanistic poetry, written sometimes with a sense of humor, creates a window on Islamic beliefs, values, and wisdom that is far removed from images of violence and terrorism. Bringing together well-known scholars of Islamic mysticism, Rumi, and the Middle East, we explore Rumi's writings, their place in Islamic literature and society, and their resurgence as bestsellers in the West. The universality of Rumi's poetry fosters an understanding of the human experience that transcends the boundaries of nations, religions, and languages. This day-long conference concludes with a night of poetry reading, whirling dervishes, and traditional sufi music. Coleman Barks, one of the most successful translators of Rumi's work in the United States, will read Rumi's poetry with accompanying musicians.

    Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi
The great mystic and poet Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi was born in Belh (Balkh), in present day Afghanistan but in Greater Khorasan region back in Persian times, on September 30, 1207 A.D. His father Bahaeddin Veled, who was known as Sultan-ul Ulema (the king of the learned men), was a renowned scholar who, however, raised the ire of the established academia of his times by critisizing the tenets of Greek philosophy. This and the start of the Mongol invasions made him decide to leave Belh. This was when Mevlana was only five years old. The family, which reached Anatolia after stopping in Yemen and Damascus, lived in Larende ( Karaman ) for seven years; and then, upon the invitation of the Selcuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, Bahaeddin Veled settled in Konya in Central Anatolia in 1220. Meanwhile Mevlana married Gevher Hatun in Karaman; his son, Sultan Veled, was born in 1226 in the same town. Bahaeddin Veled, Mevlana's father, was a cultured scholar and mystic. His knowledge, his discourses and his environment played a significant role in shaping and educating Mevlana, who advanced so rapidly that when his father died in 1230, he had already become a scholar and a teacher at the tender age of 23. Thus it would not bean exaggeration to say that Mevlana had learned the fundamentals of philosophy and mysticism from his father.
