The atmosphere of the hotel is good, a lovely garden and many different onsen.
The atmosphere of the hotel is good, a lovely garden and many different onsen, which is not to be found so easily. Free services such as massages, lemon water, etc. The staff is great! We had a very nice time talking with the waitress at the restaurant. We even got a free hour in a bath(private) due to our honey moon. Location is ok. Security is simply Japanese one, great! The only downside is the white neons in the restaurant that gives a gloomy atmosphere(warmer lights would be much better) and a newer TV! Pasquier

The staff are friendly and most speak some English.
Hotel Shikarakabaso is ideal for a ski holiday. This medium-sized hotel is very close to two ski areas, each no more than 100 metres away. The food is excellent. The staff are friendly and most speak some English. The ski equipment for rent is high quality and the after-ski onsen is very pleasant and relaxing.

Ryokan(traditional inns)
For those who want to be immersed in a uniquely Japanese atmosphere, ryokan make an ideal choice. A stay at a one of these traditional inns is usually somewhat more expensive than a night in a hotel, but is a refreshing and personal experience worth the extra expense. Two meals are included with each night's stay; dinner the day one checks in and the next day's breakfast. These meals are often local specialties such as Kyoto's own kaiseki ryori, and are served to guests in their rooms by the cordial and highly professional female staff known as nakai. The nakai typically wear kimono, and having them being your meal to you as you relax upon the tatami floor of your room is one of the most memorable aspects of time spent in a traditional inn.
The number of ryokan with private bathing facilities has increased, but common baths are the norm. In some cases the baths are filled with water pumped from a hot spring, or onsen. Yukata, a type of loose cotton kimono, are provided for guests in place of bath robes. Guests are free to wear the yukata throughout the ryokan.
Bedding at ryokan takes the form of a futon, which is a flat, foldable mattress without springs. The nakai will lay out and make the futon in the evening while the guests are out of the room.

Ryokan the Japanese style Inn typical Ryokan in a small town tatami, reed mat, room Everything You Need to Know about Staying at a Ryokan Note that the following describes a night at a mid-range or higher ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Many ryokan in Japan that specialize in foreign guests may be much less formal and may not serve dinner or even breakfast.
On arrival at a ryokan, you leave your shoes at the entrance, don a pair of slippers, and are shown by a maid to your room, which has a tatami (reed mat) floor. Slippers are taken off before entering tatami rooms. Instead of using numbers, rooms are named after auspicious flowers, plants or trees. The interior of the room will contain a tokonoma (alcove), probably decorated with a flower display or a calligraphy scroll. Do not step into or place any objects in the tokonoma. One side of the room will contain a cupboard with sliding doors for the bedding; the other side will have sliding screens covered with rice paper and, may perhaps, open onto a veranda with a garden view. tea service with the sweet The room maid then serves tea, with a Japanese sweet, on a low table surrounded by zabuton (cushions) in the centre of the room.

Lonely Planet Review
Combining the best of both worlds, the newer Annex of the well-established Katsutaro Ryokan pairs tatami rooms with Western bathrooms. In the ryokan (inn) tradition, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The building is modern and new, and unlike typical ryokan, each room has its own Western-style bathroom. Following in the footsteps of its sister ryokan, the Annex Katsutaro houses visitors with friendliness and warmth. The ryokan, though not your classic Japanese inn, incorporates modern conveniences - like free LAN Internet access in all rooms - with the comfort of futons laid on refreshingly fragrant tatami flooring. If you're looking for a true Japanese ryokan experience, this probably isn't the inn to stay in, as there's no traditional bath. There is, however, excellent wheelchair access, with wide doorways and ramped entrances. The staff speak varying degrees of English and are ever-helpful with getting you out into Tokyo (and then navigating back to the ryokan). You'll also find free coffee in the lobby while you surf the Net, also free, with 24-hour access. Review by author Wendy Yanagihara Advertisement
