Graceful sparrows brought you swiftly over the black earth, with a thick whirring of wings, from heaven down through the middle air. Suddenly they were here, and you, O Blessed, with a smile on your immortal face asked me what was wrong this time, and why I called you this time, and what in my maddened heart I wanted most to happen. Quote Of The Day
" During these past ten years more than 150,000 indigenous have died of curable disases. The federal, state, and municipal goverments and their economic and social programs do not take into account any real solution to our problems; they limit themselves to giving us charity every time elections role around. Charity resolves nothing but for the moment, and again death visits our homes. That is why we think no, no more; enough dying this useless death; it is better to fight for change. If we die now, it will not be with shame but with dignity, like our ancestors. We are ready to die, 150,000 more if necessary, so that our peole awaken from this dream of deceit that holds us hostage."-Subcomandante Marcos posted by sappho at 9:03 PM

25. Sappho: Poem I
Translation and transliteration of sappho s only surviving complete poem.

SAPPHO Poem I
TRANSLATION and TRANSLITERATION
(A detailed introduction to Sappho and her world is included in the article SAPPHO under the TRANSLATIONS index on the main index page. The following is the text/commentary section of that longer treatment. The Greek text is available at that location.)
This poem is the only complete one we have from the several volumes of Sappho's poetry which were circulating as late as the 8th c.. A.D. It has always been prized as remarkably sensitive and elegant, but there are dimensions which I believe have not been explored or interpretated. Let me give you first the text in Roman letters for those who do not read Greek, so they can at least read the words aloud and get their general sound. The translation which follows is necessary since Sappho's Aeolic dialect is not the normal Attic Greek you learn in in school, and I believe some help is called for.
Of course this translation loses immense detail, specifically the long and short vowels which make a real difference in Greek. There is no initial aspiration -h- in Aeolic so that no problem. The letters -ch- are of course more like -kh-, and the exact pronunciation of the consonants is not exactly known after the passage of two and a half millennia, not surprisingly. The accents which are printed in modern texts may not be the same as Aeolic intonation, but modern Classicists ignore the musical pitches completely, which again removes a critical part of Sappho's lyric poetry. But the poem is readable, singable, soundable as it is, with some imagination.

Sappho's Hymn to Aphrodite
Translation, notes and metrical explanation
Iridescent-throned Aphrodite, deathless
Child of Zeus, wile-weaver, I now implore you,
Don'tI beg you, Ladywith pains and torments
Crush down my spirit,
But before if ever you've heard my pleadings
Then return, as once when you left your father's
Golden house; you yoked to your shining car your
Wing-whirring sparrows;
Skimming down the paths of the sky's bright ether
On they brought you over the earth's black bosom,
Swiftlythen you stood with a sudden brilliance,
Goddess, before me;
Deathless face alight with your smile, you asked me
What I suffered, who was my cause of anguish,
What would ease the pain of my frantic mind, and
Why had I called you
To my side: "And whom should Persuasion summon
Here, to soothe the sting of your passion this time?
Who is now abusing you, Sappho? Who is
Treating you cruelly?
Now she runs away, but she'll soon pursue you;
Gifts she now rejectssoon enough she'll give them;
Now she doesn't love you, but soon her heart will
Burn, though unwilling."

Sappho's Legacy
"I say someone in another time will remember us."
Sappho, fragment 147
The lyric poet Sappho herself could not have guessed at the significance of this particular line of poetry. She may have written this to be uttered to a special friend or it could have been part of a wedding song she composed. Whatever her original meaning, Sappho could not have made a more accurate assessment of her life and works. Centuries later, Sappho remains one of the most admired and controversial poets in literary history. There are critics on both sides of the issue: some vehemently condemn her "immorality" and discard her writing while others revere her as the mother of women's writing and modern lesbianism. Yet no matter what one's personal sentiments are, one cannot disregard the importance of Sappho as one of the only sources of women's lives from the point of view of a woman. Her life is an inspiration to many, especially women in the lesbian community, though her sexuality has been much debated. Sappho was a pioneer of women's expression, and the purpose of this paper is to explore why she is so cherished.

(Musei Capitolini, Roma) Sappho: famous Greek poetess of lyric poetry. Only a few fragments survive. To a certain extent, the beauty of Sappho's poetry is caused by the fact that it is fragmentary. Her poetry is quoted by later authors, but most of their quotations are short and offer us a tantalizing glimpse of what once must have been a poem of great quality. Unlike Homer and Hesiod , Sappho and the other lyric poets tried to express private sentiments. Because almost none of her poems is complete, it is hard to understand them, and many interpretations tell us more about the classicist than about the author, who lived c.600 in Mytilene on the Greek island of Lesbos. Most scholars agree, however, that Sappho had a school where young aristocratic women received education before marriage. Because Sappho sometimes expresses passionate sentiments for young girls, she is often called "lesbian" (in our sense of the word). This is in fact an oversimplification, because the Greeks had other ideas about homosexuality than we have. Besides, these attitudes changed. Later generations were often hostile to woman-girl relationships, but it is very likely that in sixth-century Mytilene, this type of love was not frowned upon.

Sappho, the poetess of Lesbos to Sappho, Kolkata (Calcutta)
Deriving its name from the legendary character of ancient Greek literature, Sappho is a support group for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. With its base in Kolkata, West Bengal, it is the only group of its kind in the whole of eastern India. Founded on 20th June 1999 on the initiative of just one lesbian couple wanting to find a space for social interaction without needing to conceal their sexual preference and their real relationship, today Sappho has more than 50 regular members. and provides safe space for many more through its helpline, email service and website information.
The primary goal of the organization was to provide safe space for women with same sex preference but gradually it moved into a rights oriented movement to fight discrimination and hatred against marginalized women with same sex preference so that free, fair and fearless life does not remain a utopia.
SAPPHO IS COMITTED TO:
1.Creating a safe space for women with same-sex preference, irrespective of their economic background, caste, class, religion and language differences.

"Monique Wittig and Sande Zeig in their Lesbian Peoples: Material for a Dictionary devote a full page to Sappho. The page is blank." So John Winkler began one of the most perceptive articles of recent years on Sappho. Wittig and Zeig's blank page is a salutary warning that we know nothing about Sappho. Or worse: Everything we know is wrong. Even the most basic "facts" are simply not so or in need of a stringent critical reexamination. A single example. We are told over and over again that Sappho "was married to Kerkylas of Andros, who is never mentioned in any of the extant fragments of her poetry" (Snyder). Not surprising, since it's a joke name: he's Dick Allcock from the Isle of MAN. It's been over 139 years since William Mure pointed this out and it is there in Wilamowitz and easily accessible in the

SONGS OF SAPPHO
A performance-lecture by Paula Saffire, Ph.D. Saffire appears dressed in ancient costume and sings Sappho's songs in English and Greek. The English songs are special "singing translations." Why do this?
"So Ancient Roses May Bloom Forever"
(headline of an article about British cultivators of antique roses) The performance-lecture lasts 50-75 minutes. It consists of songs, slides, and commentary, spiced with personal anecdotes.
STUDENT COMMENTS:
"I was really amazed by the power of the songs." Tim Miller , student at Butler University "This was the nicest hour I spent at my old college." J.W. , transfer student, who saw the performance
at Hanover College and came to see it again at Wooster College
"In her own translations, Saffire maintains Sappho's poignant sensitivity in speaking of love, desire, desperation, jealousy and contentment. ... Sappho's poetry is surrounded by sensuality, tenderness and humor. Saffire was very successful in passing these qualities on to the audience as she brought her repertoire of Sappho's poetry to life." Anna von Unwerth , Women's Studies major, Wooster student newspaper "When you are presented with a person dressed in mythological clothing playing and singing, learning doesn't seem like learning any more."

Here are two slightly different versions of the original poem, transcribed in Roman characters (the differences presumably reflect different decisions regarding textual emendation or different styles of Romanization). I have replaced macrons (horizontal lines over vowels) with circumflexes, as macrons do not reproduce consistently in Internet formats.
