Siegfried Sassoon (1886 - 1967)
An English war poet, Sassoon was also known for his fictionalised autobiographies, praised for their evocation of English country life. Siegfried Sassoon was born on 8 September 1886 in Kent. His father was part of a Jewish merchant family, originally from Iran and India, and his mother part of the artistic Thorneycroft family. Sassoon studied at Cambridge University but left without a degree. He then lived the life of a country gentleman, hunting and playing cricket while also publishing small volumes of poetry. In May 1915, Sassoon was commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and went to France. He impressed many with his bravery in the front line and was given the nickname 'Mad Jack' for his near-suicidal exploits. He was decorated twice. His brother Hamo was killed in November 1915 at Gallipoli.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Siegfried Sassoon Biography Siegfried Loraine Sassoon (September 8, 1886 - September 1, 1967) was an English poet and author. He became known as a writer of satirical anti-war verse during World War I, but later won acclaim for his prose work.
Sassoon was born in Matfield, Kent, to a Jewish father and English mother. His father, Alfred, one of the wealthy Sassoon merchant family, was disinherited for marrying outside the faith. His mother, Teresa, belonged to the Thornycroft family, sculptors responsible for many of the best-known statues in London her brother was Sir Hamo Thornycroft. There was no German blood in Siegfried's family; he owed his unusual first name to his mother's predilection for the operas of Wagner. His middle name was taken from the surname of a clergyman with whom she was friendly.
Sassoon was educated at Marlborough College in Wiltshire, and at Clare College, Cambridge, where he studied both law and history from 1905 to 1907. However, he dropped out of university without a degree, and spent the next few years hunting, playing cricket, and privately publishing a few volumes of not very highly acclaimed poetry. His income was just enough to prevent his having to seek work, but not enough to live extravagantly. His first real success was The Daffodil Murderer, a parody of a work by John Masefield.
Sassoon's periods of duty on the Western Front were marked by recklessly brave actions, including the single-handed capture of a German trench in the Hindenburg Line. He often went out on night-raids and bombing patrols, and demonstrated ruthless efficiency as a company commander. Deepening depression at the horror and misery the soldiers were forced to endure produced in Sassoon a paradoxically manic courage, and he was nicknamed "Mad Jack" by his men for his suicidal exploits. Despite having been decorated for bravery, he decided, in 1917, to make a stand against the conduct of the war. One of the reasons for his violent anti-war feeling was the death of his friend, David Cuthbert Thomas (called "Dick Tiltwood" in the Sherston trilogy). Sassoon's close relationship with Thomas was a tacit admission of his own homosexuality, which he would spend several years attempting to overcome.

Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967)
Before the First World War, Sassoon enjoyed life as a gentleman of independent means dividing his time between literary London and his country estate. Awarded the Military Cross for valour, Sassoon's brutal experiences in the trenches turned him against the military top brass. Convinced that the authorities were prolonging the conflict and exploiting the men, in 1917 (the year in which his first collection was published) he threw away his medal and launched a one-man campaign to halt the war. Sent to a hospital to recuperate from shell shock, he met Wilfred Owen whose poetic endeavours he greatly encouraged. Sassoon's own wartime verse savaged the patriotic cant of the generals. Bitter, shocking and incisively satiric, it is underpinned by a deep compassion for the plight of the ordinary soldier. Later in life he turned to devotional poetry, and was received into the Catholic Church in 1957. He also wrote a trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels

In The Old Huntsman (1917) and Counter-Attack (1918) Sassoon writes of the realities of trench warfare: The place was rotten with dead; green clumsy legs

His earlier poetry, based on his experiences as an officer in World War I, is an expression of his reactions to the brutalities and waste of war. Volumes such as The Old Huntsman (1917) and Counter-Attack and Other Poems (1918) make pointed contrasts between the possibility of life and the reality of senseless death. For many years after the war, a series of semiautobiographical novels, three of which were collectively published as The Complete Memoirs of George Sherston (1937), continued this theme. Siegfried's Journey, 1916-20 (1945) completes the record of his growing awareness of war's futility. Sassoon's

Reading module 7 Siegfried Sassoon wrote several poems referred to the Great War. He experienced the reality of the war first-hand, since he enlisted at the beginning of the war, because of this ‘his poetry reflects the evolution of his attitudes towards war, beginning with a vision of combat as an exploit reflecting glory and nobility, and ending with muddy, bloody realism’ ( Glbtq literature Sassoon, Siegfried , Glbtq, inc, 2005, http://www.glbtq.com/literature/sassoon_s.html In October 1917 Sassoon wrote ‘Survivors’, a poem that I am going to analyse below. It is an ironic poem which talks about the soldiers that survived the war. It reflects how much they suffered physically and mentally.
Survivors No doubt they’ll soon get well; the shock and strai n Have caused their stammering, disconnected talk. Of course they're ‘longing to go out again’,— These boys with old, scared faces, learning to walk. They’ll soon forget their haunted nights; their cowed,— Subjection to the ghosts of friends who died, — Their dreams that drip with murder; and they’ll be proud
