Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)
A major figure among the English Romantic poets, Shelley led an unconventional life and died tragically young. Percy Bysshe Shelley was born on 4 August 1792 near Horsham in Sussex. His father was an member of parliament. Shelley was educated at Eton and at Oxford University. There he began to read radical writers such as Tom Paine and William Godwin. In 1811, he was expelled for his contribution to a pamphlet supporting atheism. Shelley then eloped to Scotland with 16-year-old Harriet Westbrook. The resulting scandal caused a serious rift with his family. Harriet and Shelley had two children, but soon separated. In 1813, Shelley published his first serious work, 'Queen Mab'. In 1814, Shelley fell in love with Mary, the 16-year-old daughter of writers William Godwin, a friend of Shelley's, and Mary Wollstonecraft. The couple travelled together in Europe and spent the summer of 1816 at Lake Geneva with Lord Byron. Shelley wrote poetry and Mary conceived the idea for her novel 'Frankenstein'.

Percy Bysshe Shelley
Percy Bysshe Shelley was born in Horsham, Sussex the son of a Whig landowner. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, from which he was sent down in 1811 for writing a pamphlet on atheism. This, together with his elopement with and marriage to the sixteen year-old Harriet Westbrook in the same year, caused an irreparable breach with his family. Shelley later abandoned Harriet for Mary Wollstonecraft, whom he married after Harriet's suicide. Shelley's latter years were spent in the company of other literary and political exiles in Italy, where he enjoyed a greater freedom to express his revolutionary ideas. He drowned at sea in the Bay of Spezia. Shelley is without doubt one of the great Romantic poets who, in spite of his turbulent and colourful life, produced works which are full of passion, creative energy, and lyrical beauty. Ozymandias

Death will come when thou art dead,
Soon, too soon
Sleep will come when thou art fled;
Of neither would I ask the boon
I ask of the beloved Night
Come soon, soon!
PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY, To Night
Power, like a desolating pestilence,
Pollutes whate'er it touches.
PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY, Queen Mab
While yet a boy I sought for ghosts, and sped
Through many a listening chamber, cave and ruin,
And starlight wood, with fearful steps pursuing
Hopes of high talk with the departed dead.
