Artest's intensity strikes fear in everyone
By Sam Smith
Special to ESPN.com
Everyone has a Ron Artest story. I've got dozens. Sometimes they're playful, like when Artest decided to make a statement on behalf of teammate and friend Jamal Crawford , who was feuding with former Bulls coach Tim Floyd because he wasn't playing. Crawford always wore a headband, so Artest did also in solidarity. So Floyd benched Artest. Sometimes they're not so playful, like the halftime of a game in Artest's second full season with the Bulls. Artest was traded midway through his third season in Chicago, and neither of the first two was very pleasant. The Bulls won 17 games his first season and 15 his second. That would drive any player crazy. It was a shorter trip for Artest. Ron Artest, right, wants to stop his man at all times. Just ask Kevin Garnett, left.

781 S.W. 2d 761 (Mo.banc 1989) Case Facts: On January 15, 1987 at the Missouri State Penitentiary in Housing Unit 5 a group of inmates armed with knives attacked inmate Demetrius Hemdon. Inmate Samuel Smith yelled at the attackers in an attempt to intervene, but one of the group, inmate Marlin Mays, turned toward Smith and threatened him. Smith and Mays then engaged in a fight of their own.
During the altercation Smith stabbed Mays numerous times in spite of the efforts of correctional officers to stop the fight. The two finally separated when an officer sprayed them with chemical mace. The correctional officers were able to pull Mays to safety and found that he had been stabbed 19 times in the head, chest, back, and arm. Smith ran upstairs to the housing unit where he was disarmed and detained. Mays died at the scene as a result of piercing injuries to the heart and lungs. Samuel D. Smith was born on June 12, 1960 in St. Louis, Missouri.

here is the trade for the rox:
"4. Allan Houston for Eddie Griffin, Cuttino Mobley and Glen Rice. The Rockets get Houston, who is the shooter and the veteran to complement Steve Francis and open the floor for Yao Ming. It gives them three potential All-Stars to make a run in the West and Houston will be a locker room presence for new coach Jeff Van Gundy. Houston in Houston. Is that perfect, or what? The Knicks need an infusion of young talent and get Griffin, Mobley and Rice. Rice is going into the final year of his contract, so the Knicks save millions in the luxury tax after next season. Mobley and the 6-foot-10 Griffin are two youngsters who they can begin building with along with the No. 9 overall pick in this draft, which they could now use for a young point guard to go with shooting guard Mobley." http://www.wsu.edu/nis/smith_sam.html
Board of Regents
Education center renamed
The Board of Regents has named Washington State University’s newest building, the Center for Undergraduate Education, after WSU President Emeritus Samuel H. Smith. The Samuel H. Smith Center for Undergraduate Education, which opened in January, will be dedicated in May. Regent William Marler said the center is a "tribute to Sam’s vision," with programs that are "world-class." President V. Lane Rawlins called the new name a fitting tribute and will stand as a monument for Smith’s accomplishments in higher education. Smith attended the meeting and acknowledged he was deeply honored. "The quality of undergraduate education is what is it’s all about," Smith said. WSU’s eighth president, Smith led the university from 1985 to 2000. Under his leadership, WSU’s teaching, research and public service activities received world recognition. He strengthened undergraduate and graduate education, placed an international imprint on programs, and created urban campuses in Spokane, the Tri-Cities and Vancouver. A California native, Smith, 61, is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. He became WSU’s president after serving as dean of the College of Agriculture of Pennsylvania State University. He now resides in Seattle.

Finally people are starting to realize the trade isn't one-sided after all. Great article although many points have been brought up on this board before. Joe Mama March 28th, 2003, 10:11 AM You beat me to it, Cheng. I normally do not like Sam Smith, but this is a good article. It really is a fair assessment of the situation.
I just can't believe Smith didn't have some asinine trade proposal involving Marbury and the Chicago Bulls in the article somewhere. :-)

You were so sure the Golden State Warriors were idiots. Vince Carter for Antawn Jamison? Are you kidding? The steal of the century, right? Now just a minute. The Warriors, led by the high-scoring Jamison, continue to fight for a playoff spot in the rough Western Conference, while the Toronto Raptors have become perhaps the NBA's biggest disappointment and Carter, the once next great one, has become arguably the league's most reluctant superstar an immense talent who'd rather pass to Antonio Davis. Who would you take now?
Marbury, bottom, endured a rough first season in Phoenix after being dealt for Kidd.

OK, OK, we all were wrong. Yao Ming is going to be a lot better than we thought, and a lot faster than we thought. But let's not get carried away here. He is no Shaq, or Kareem or Wilt. Or Hakeem. That should be clear Friday when Yao faces Shaquille O'Neal for the first time. But Jerry West told us that last spring in Chicago when Yao had his first American workout for NBA executives. It was true then, and although Yao has shown more than what most didn't imagine or certainly see in that exercise then, it is also true now. Despite not having a Shaq-like mean streak, Yao Ming, right, should still stand tall in the NBA.

CHUD Forums Sports PDA View Full Version : Recent Suspensions, NBA in general, violence in sports. NervousXtian, gonzo journalist. 01-30-2003, 07:07 PM first I just read this
and it got me thinking.
first, to all these players it's not just a "game". It's their JOB . For so long you hear everyone saying.. "but it's just a game". It stopped being a game when they started getting paid. When something you do at work affects your future employment and wages it's not "just a game"
secondly, I've watched the Sloan supposedly "push" the ref, and I feel the suspension was wrong. Sloan lost his head, sure. But what the Ref did was wrong. Same as in the Rasheed Wallace case. The ref should of been suspended when he stepped at Sloan and started yelling in his face, how is this really different from baseball where Lou Pinella gets just a slap on the wrist when he kicks dirt on a ref or bumps a ref.. its bullshit. This goes back to point number one above, the Ref made a bad call, a call that affects Sloan's team, Sloan's job depends on his team winning and he expects the Ref's to be impartial and to do a fair job.. it's time for the ref's to stop being so damn "untouchable".. atleast in the NFL they will admit to making bad calls, the NBA won't and seems they never will
When that Ref stepped towards Sloan and the ref stepped towards Rasheed they KNEW what they were getting into, and maybe they weren't AS at fault for what happened they should of served a punishment as well..
