foreword by James R. Mellow
Stein considered this her definitive statement for the opera and the theater, yet, incredibly, it has remained out of print for half a century and has become so rare that even scholars read it in Xerox. Now reprinted for the first time since she published it herself in Paris (Plain Editions, 1932), contains the most important of Gertrude Stein's extraordinary contribution to the literature of opera and theater. One of America's most influential writers and most famous expatriates she represented the fusion of modernism and postmodernism in these "word plays." This book contains twenty different pieces virtually all of which have been out of print for decades. It includes the original version of the opera Four Saints in Three Acts (1927), set by Virgil Thompson, as well as A Lyrical Opera Made by Two Saints and Singing Reread Another The Five Georges (1931), and two movie treatments, among others.

Articles About Stein, Gertrude
Gertrude Stein: Hostess of the Parisian Literary Salon May 28, 2007 In 1874 the ground was fertile for Gertrude Stein to become a woman of virile thoughts even in her youth. After having been born in a small industrial town near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, little Gertrude Stein took to a life abroad at age onecrawling, then walking in Vienna, America, and elsewhere in Europe, under the care of her capricious, travel-happy father, her mother, and her four siblings.

Stein, Gertrude. Tender Buttons
  • An example of the attempt of Stein to remediate Cubist aesthetics in print
A complete detachment of the sign from the signified; words are reduced to their basest syllabic and phonetic rhythm
The resulting text is one that is both a staunch refusal to adhere to contemporary trends as well as a an attempt to create a meaning-less consciousness where the totality of the sign is irrevocably brought to bear in the present—no prior meanings are entirely attached to the signs, and the effect is more of an instinctual feeling rather than a continuous, discrete set of alphabetic phonemes (i.e. continuity is maintained, but only through cadence and oral/aural means and not direct pragmatic inference)
  • The consciousness of the present; a Cubist work tries to unfurl the unfettered whole across the canvas, to demarcate the three dimensional across a two dimensional plane
  • "Indeed, cyberspace is in many ways the logical end to an extensive project which Stein amongst othersbegan at the turn of the century; a project in which a coherent sense of time, memory and history are rejected in favour of non-narrative modes of representation. The early modernists were instrumental in developing an art of the pure sign, or an art in which the concrete materialswords, paintbecome the artist's subject matter. Stein famously favoured verbs rather than nouns, because verbs can be 'mistaken', and shifters (linking words), because their meanings change depending on the context in which they are used. In her famous essay Speculations, or Post-Impressionism in Prose, Mabel Dodge praised the intuitive way in which Stein: "[chose] words for their inherent quality, rather than for their accepted meaning," a prescient observation in light of the work of Jacques Derrida, who recently proposed a science of the concrete written sign called grammatology." Contents: The Good Anna
    Melanctha
    The Gentle Lena
excerpt from THE GOOD ANNA Part I The tradesmen of Bridgepoint learned to dread the sound of "Miss Mathilda", for with that name the good Anna always conquered. The strictest of the one price stores found that they could give things for a little less, when the good Anna had fully said that "Miss Mathilda" could not pay so much and that she could buy it cheaper "by Lindheims." Lindheims was Anna's favorite store, for there they had bargain days, when flour and sugar were sold for a quarter of a cent less for a pound, and there the heads of the departments were all her friends and always managed to give her the bargain prices, even on other days. Anna led an arduous and troubled life.

GERTRUDE STEIN QUOTES A nice war is a war where everybody who is heroic is a hero, and everybody more or less is a hero in a nice war. Now this war is not at all a nice war. GERTRUDE STEIN, Wars I Have Seen War is more like a novel than it is like real life and that is its eternal fascination. It is a thing based on reality but invented, it is a dream made real, all the things that make a novel but not really life. GERTRUDE STEIN, Paris France A long war like this makes you realise the society you really prefer, the home, goats chickens and dogs and casual acquaintances. I find myself not caring at all for gardens flowers or vegetables cats cows and rabbits, one gets tired of trees vines and hills, but houses, goats chickens dogs and casual acquaintances never pall. Stein, Gertrude Stein, Gertrude (1874-1946), American writer, whose impact on 20th-century culture derives perhaps as much from the influence of her personality and her role as a patron of the arts as from her own creative writings. Stein was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on February 3, 1874, and educated at Radcliffe College and the medical school of Johns Hopkins University. In 1903 she settled in Paris, where with her friend, the American writer, Alice B. Toklas, she lived the rest of her life. Stein's most celebrated early works were Three Lives (1909), character studies of three women, and The Making of Americans (1925), a novel dealing with the social and cultural history of her own family. For each she devised an unconventional narrative form in which plot is almost wholly eliminated and a free prose style, embodying radical innovations in syntax and punctuation, is used. Throughout her life Stein experimented with the uses of language. She explains some of her theories of composition in
