Suetonius
Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia Cite This Source
Suetonius (Caius Suetonius Tranquillus), c. A.D. 69-c. A.D. 140, Roman biographer. Little is known about his life except that he was briefly the private secretary of Emperor Hadrian. His De vita Caesarum [concerning the lives of the Caesars] survives almost in full; it was translated into English by Robert Graves as The Twelve Caesars (1957). There are also fragments of a much larger collection of biographies, De viris illustribus [concerning illustrious men]. He gathered together all sorts of anecdotes, and the resultant biographies are lively and informative. Suetonius was taken as a model by many later biographers.

I'm going to get back to working on my time machine. I pour gin into a cup, and then I put the cup with the gin in it to my lips, and then I drink the gin from the cup, and then I repeat the drinking of the gin from the cup multiple times. With enough dedication, I forget what era I'm in, and I go back and visit all my friends in Ancient Rome. Nice. CAMUS, SUETONIUS AND THE CALIGULA MYTH
THE PHENOMENON of the revival of classical Greek themes in the French theatre in the mid-twentieth century has by now been well discussed and documented. Classical tombs may well have been robbed in France between 1920 and 1950, and the genre has undoubtedly been Yet of the enormous range of themes and characters which were fully exploited in the Renaissance, the number transposed to the modern period is small. Oedipus and Jocasta, Antigone and Creon, Orestes and Electra, these are the characters and relationships which dominate the age, reflecting, perhaps, some of the most significant aspects of the French malaise at this time: increasing sensitivity to the arrogance of political power, a growing consciousness in intellectuals of metaphysical alienation, and a general re-examination of personal (particularly sexual?) values. Atridae. Prometheus Bound which he did with the Theatre du Travail in March, 1937. By this time, it will be remembered, Camus had been heavily involved in the creation of two semi-Brechtian, anti-Fascist plays, Le Temps du Mépris and Révolte dans les Asturies

Editorial Comments
Aside from the works of the authors Josephus Flavius (Antiquities of the Jews, 18.63-64) and Tacitus (Annals, 15.44), Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (Suetonius, Lives, Nero, 16), is often listed chronologically as the third independent citation in the evolution of christian ecclesiastical history. In a separate review of The Evolution of Christs and Christianities by Jay Raskin (2006) these above three independent citations are seriously questioned. Raskin points out that the article Ken Olson, "Eusebius and the Testimonium Flavianum," (Catholic Biblical Quarterly, 61 (1999): 305-322) effectively argues that Eusebius in the fourth century has interpolated into Josephus. Raskin then tries to establish "that the early references to Christianity found in the historians Tacitus and Suetonius, are likely from Eusebius Our thesis, that Constantine Invented Christianity , obviously supported by these above two separate textual criticisms, is capable of being refuted (either in whole or in part) by the provision of the appropriate scientific and/or archeological citations. To-date there have been no refutations, however an exceptions index of frequently mentioned citations has been prepared.

Ancient Roman Historian Writes of Jesus' Followers
    Brian Tubbs Jul 10, 2007
Suetonius was a court official under the Roman Emperor Hadrian, and is one of the leading historians of ancient Rome. What can we infer from his writings?
The ancient Roman historian Suetonius made two interesting historical notes about the followers of Jesus Christ - from which we can draw some rather interesting inferences. Suetonius writes in his Life of Clauidius that the Roman Emperor Claudius expelled the Jews from Rome "as the Jews were making constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus." (Historians agree that this was an alternative spelling or misspelling of "Christus" - the Roman name for Christ). Suetonius' reference to Claudius' expulsion of the Jews from Rome affirms Luke's account of this same event (Acts 18:2), which took place in A.D. 49. Secular history backing up biblical history.

    Suetonius on Caligula's Sex Life
Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (b. A.D. 12, d. A.D. 41) became emperor in A.D 37. His was one of the most notorius and yet poorly documented reigns. As a boy he was nicknamed Caligula, which means 'Little Boots', by the men in the army, as he went about dressed in a soldier's uniform with matching miniature boots. He was said to be extremely cruel and his characyer appears to be that of a true psychopath. He had people executed for practicaly next to nothing, confiscated people's wealth for himself, imposed outrageously silly laws, had incestuous relations with his sisters, etc. Whatever nasty thing you can imagine, Caligula probably did it.
Suetonius provides us with plenty of gossip about Caligula, and a very intriguing paragraph on his sex life:
