Algernon Charles Swinburne Algernon Charles Swinburne was born in London, the son of an admiral, and grew up on the Isle of Wight. He was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, leaving without a degree. He first came to public attention with the play Atalanta in Calydon (1865) but it was the publication of the irreverent Poems and Ballads the following year which brought him a mixture of controversy and acclaim. Thereafter he wrote prolifically, publishing a more toned-down Poems and Ballads: Second Series in 1878 and several prose works. He was rescued from alcohol addiction in 1879 by his friend Theodore Watts Dunton, at his home under his control in Putney for the rest of his life. His latter years were highly productive and he produced Tristam of Lyonesse Poems and Ballads: Third Series (1889), and several verse plays. Vicino al movimento preraffaellita , si distinse per i temi libertari ed erotici e per il virtuosismo linguistico, in particolare per la musicalit  dei versi e gli esperimenti nell'uso del metro e della rima. Dopo la pubblicazione, nel 1860, dei due drammi in versi La regina madre e Rosmunda , Swinburne strinse amicizia a Londra con Dante Gabriel Rossetti William Morris e George Meredith . Raggiunse fama immediata con il dramma in versi Atalanta in Calidone (1865), ambizioso tentativo di riprodurre, tanto nella forma quanto nello spirito, la tragedia greca. Il primo volume dell'opera erotica Poesie e ballate , pubblicato nel 1866, suscit² uno dei pi¹ grandi scandali letterari dell'epoca vittoriana. Il poeta, consapevole della provocazione, vi celebr² l'amore fisico e la sensualit  nello spirito dei poeti lirici greci.
