Z Rabindranath Tagore Biography Rabindranath Tagore (May 6, 1861 - August 7, 1941) also called Robi Thakur or Gurudeb was an Indian poet, Hindu philosopher and nationalist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913.
In India, Rabindranath Tagore has transcended, as often happens in the Indian paradigm, the simple position of a writer-philosopher. Especially among bodies, he is revered as a Guru. Since great thinkers, who are often religious in their purview, are seen as gurus and close to Bhagavan (God) by Hindus, Rabindranath Tagore is especially revered. Hindus believe that by listening to the words of such wise and enlightened men, people are brought closer to Bhagavan. For this reason, he is affectionately known as Gurudeb (or Gurudev in Hindi), which means, literally, Teacher-God.
Among his literay oeuvre is included, though poetry takes the centrestage, novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, drama, and no less notably, over 2000 songs (belonging to a genre known as Rabindrasangeet) which are cultural treasures of Bengal in both West Bengal (India) and the predominantly Muslim Bangladesh. The Rabindrasangeets, which most frequently deal with transcendental love and spirituality are immensely popular with speakers of the language and form a foundation for the Bengali ethos that is comparable to, perhaps even greater than, that which Shakespeare had on the English-speaking world.
While his prose often dealt with social questions, political ideas, educational ideals, and his vision of the universal brotherhood of man, Tagore's poetry and songs, apart from its deep religious, spiritual and devotional streak, often expressed simply a celebration of nature and life. Life's multifarious variety was ever a source of Ohoituki Ananda, pleasure without outward reason, for him. No less noteworthy are his outputs on love, which recurs as a major motif throughout his literature, and on patriotism.

Rabindranath Tagore: Highest Price The Golden Boat My Song back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
    Highest Price
translated by William Radice "Who will buy me, who will buy me, rid me of my cares?"
Thus I shout and thus I wander through my nights and days; And with each day that passes
    My basket presses
Upon my head more heavily. People come and go: some laugh; some watch me tearfully. At noon I make my way along the king's great stone-paved road,
And soon he comes in his chariot, sword in hand, crown on his head. "I'll buy by force," he says
    And grabs me, tries
To drag me off. I wriggle free With ease; the king climbs into his golden chariot and rides away. In small back lanes I wander past bolted and shuttered doors.
A door opens; an old man with a money-bag appears. He examines what I have
And Says, "I'll give You gold." He returns again and again, Empties his purse. With far-off thoughts I carry my basket on. At evening over the richly blossoming florest moonbeams fall.

By Rabindranath Tagore My Lord, The Baby I Raicharan was twelve years old when he came as a servant to his master's house. He belonged to the same caste as his master, and was given his master's little son to nurse. As time went on the boy left Raicharan's arms to go to school. From school he went on to college, and after college he entered the judicial service. Always, until he married, Raicharan was his sole attendant. But, when a mistress came into the house, Raicharan found two masters instead of one. All his former influence passed to the new mistress. This was compensated for by a fresh arrival. Anukul had a son born to him, and Raicharan by his unsparing attentions soon got a complete hold over the child. He used to toss him up in his arms, call to him in absurd baby language, put his face close to the baby's and draw it away again with a grin. Presently the child was able to crawl and cross the doorway. When Raicharan went to catch him, he would scream with mischievous laughter and make for safety. Raicharan was amazed at the profound skill and exact judgment the baby showed when pursued. He would say to his mistress with a look of awe and mystery: "Your son will be a judge some day."

Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Rabindranath (1861-1941), the most celebrated personality in modern Indian literature, popularly called Gurudeva (“Revered Guru”) and respected as a visionary. An icon of Bengali culture, he influenced writers in all Indian languages, as well as many Western authors, after he became the first non-European to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He wrote prolifically in Bengali, and translated some of his own work into English (these translations are thus considered original work by some critics), while also penning occasional prose in English. The sheer range and variety of his creative output made one scholar remark that he “is the world’s most complete writer”. Born into an upper-class Bengali family in Calcutta in 1861, Rabindranath resisted institutionalized schooling: he never completed formal education at any level. However, he showed literary talent quite early—he composed his first poem at the age of 8, and had a poem published when he was 14. He married in 1883, and from 1890 spent a long period supervising the ancestral estates in East Bengal (now Bangladesh), which awakened his love of nature. In 1901 he moved to Santiniketan in West Bengal, where his father used to retreat for meditation. The starkly beautiful rural setting inspired him to start an open-classroom school there. He suffered several personal bereavements from 1902 to 1907: his wife, father, a son, and a daughter died. Tagore’s works reveal a pronounced spirituality from this point, while his nationalist political activism also decreased. In 1910 Macmillan (London) printed his first book of self-translations
