Through the course of American literature there have been a number of highly influencial and historically significant African American authors. Their works inspired and continue to inspire the nation and draw international recognition and awards. This webquest will introduce some of the most famous black authors of the past and present.
Essential Question:
Who are some of the more famous black authors of American literature? What are some of their most significant achievements?
Task:
In Part One, you will briefly explore the life and works of five black authors (Maya Angelou, Gwendolyn Brooks, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Virgina Hamilton, Lorraine Hansberry and Langston Hughes). Using the Internet resources provided, you will find and answer questions about each author. In Part Two, you will work with a team of up to three other students. You will choose an author to research. Using Internet and library resources your team will prepare a research project on the author you have chosen.

Grade Level: 3 - 5 Synopsis: It is the spring of 1925, and Ida Benson wants to become a teacher; but the 14-year-old Colorado girl has a problem. The teacher of her one-room schoolhouse has to leave before Ida can graduate from the 8th grade, and the school board sees no reason to get a new teacher to finish out the school year. Ida cannot go onto high school in the fall unless she passes her exams this spring. Ida keeps the school open the only way she knows how, by secretly becoming the teacher herself. Through all the struggles, Ida shows determination and resourcefulness while learning more about herself and her co-conspirators at The Secret School.

Biography
An author famous for her children’s fiction stories, Mildred Delois Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi on September 13 . She did not stay in Jackson long; the racial discrimination in the South influenced her father’s, Wilbert Taylor’s, belief that more opportunities awaited his family in more northern states. Thus, after her first three months of life, her family moved to Ohio after her father established a factory in Toledo, Ohio . This move got her extended family to thinking about going North as well; it ended up that Mildred D. Taylor grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. But, Mr. Taylor still had a love for his old home, so there were several trips to the relatives that had stayed in the South. Many stories of the family history and actual childhoods were told during those visits, and were the core inspiration for Mildred Taylor’s stories and books. This storytelling time was a regular event on the trips to the South. The family storytellers recollected accounts of struggles with severe racism in the South, tragedies and triumphs; humorous yarns were told and many of the stories were about surviving and the
