Jump to: navigation search This article is about Terence, the writer. For other uses, see Terence (disambiguation) Publius Terentius Afer , better known as Terence , was a playwright of the Roman Republic . His comedies were performed for the first time ca. 160 BC , and he died young probably in 159 BC , in Greece or on his way back to Rome . Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator , brought Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him and later on, impressed by his abilities, freed him. All of the six plays Terence wrote have survived (by comparison, his predecessor Plautus wrote twenty-one extant plays). One famous quote by Terence reads: " Homo sum, humani nil a me alienum puto ", or "I am a man, I consider nothing that is human alien to me." This appeared in his play Heauton Timorumenos . this phrase demonstrates the progressive, tolerant way that Terence viewed the world.

Terence McKenna has been studying the ontological foundations of Shamanism and the Ethnopharmacology of spiritual transformation for the past quarter century. An innovative theoretician and spellbinding orator, Terence has emerged as a powerful voice for the psychedelic movement and the emergent societal tendency he calls The Archaic Revival . Poetically dispensing enlightened social criticism and new theories of the fractal dynamics of time, Terence deobfuscates many aspects of the visionary lexicon, and then some. As

Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us TERENCE (c. 190-158 B.C.) T HE second important writer of Latin comedies presents a remarkable contrast to the first. Terence (Publius Terentius Afer), probably a native of Carthage, was a slave in the family of a Roman patrician. On account of his witty conversation and graceful manners, he became a favorite in the fashionable society of Rome and received his freedom. His work, so far as we know it, consists of two sorts: fairly close translations of Menander , and contaminations. There are six extant plays, three of which, The Brothers, The Girl of Andros, and The Eunuch , are contaminations. Each is made from two Greek plays. Of the remaining three, the Phormio is based on a play by the Greek Apollodorus, and the others are from Menander. The Brothers (Adelphi) The weakness of Terence lies in his lack of the bolder elements of action. His characters are somewhat deficient in variety, and his situations are inferior to those of

5 April, 2008 in media opinion No comments I usually try to keep political issues out of this blog, and I certainly try to avoid asking friends and readers of this blog for favours, but there is an urgent situation developing in mathematics in my home country of Australia, and I need to ask all of you for assistance to prevent an impending disaster. When I was an undergraduate at Flinders University in South Australia from 1989 to 1992, the level of mathematics education in Australia was comparable to that of world-class institutions overseas. Even in a small and little-known university such as Flinders, I received a first class honours undergraduate education in mathematics, computer science, and physics which I continue to use daily in my career. (Examples of topics I learned as an undergraduate include wavelets; information theory; Lie algebras; differential geometry; nonlinear PDE; quantum mechanics; statistical mechanics; and harmonic analysis. I rely on my knowledge of all of these topics today, for instance many of them are are helpful for me in teaching my

My Motto: Why program by hand in five days what you can spend five years of your life automating?
Bio
Terence Parr is a professor of computer science at the University of San Francisco where he continues to work on his ANTLR parser generator, http://www.antlr.org. Terence recently returned from years in industry where he co-founded jGuru.com. He herded programmers and implemented the large jGuru developers web site, during which time he developed and refined the StringTemplate engine. Terence has consulted for and held various technical positions at companies such as IBM, Lockheed Missiles and Space, NeXT, and Renault Automation. Terence holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Purdue University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Army High-Performance Computing Research Center at the University of Minnesota where he built parallelizing FORTRAN source-to-source translators.
Educational philosophy:
I have two primary teaching goals regardless of the course subject matter. First, I try to dramatically increase a student's self-expectations and, of course, their knowledge about the subject. Being a good teacher means stretching students without discouraging them or destroying their confidence. Second, I insist that students learn self-reliance; students must attempt solutions on their own and then, if they have failed, come to me for help. Students must get used to learning new concepts and technologies, solving their own problems, and doing their own research. As a programmer, they will constantly have to keep up with the latest advances to avoid becoming unemployable.

SCOTT ELLIOTT GETS MARRIED My Hollywood private eye, Scott Elliott , has a new title, his first novella, In a Teapot . It was released in September by the Mystery Company, an imprint of the Crum Creek Press, the publisher who brought out the paperback edition of Elliott's first case, Kill Me Again . Teapot is a 23,000 word mystery, in hardcover, complete with illustrations by Michigan artist Robin Agnew. The story, set in 1948, not long after Kill Me Again , involves an attempt to film Shakespeare's The Tempest, with a cast drawn from Hollywood's famed British colony. The filming is interrupted by a murder, the investigation of which is interrupted in turn by Elliott's wedding to the lovely Ella (Pidgin) Englehart. I think The Mystery Company did a beautiful job on this book, which the Chicago Tribune called "a short, tasty lemon meringue. . . ingredients: wit, humor, and characters just a little larger than life." I'm prejudiced, of course, but I think it would make a great stocking stuffer for any mystery reader. OWEN KEANE RETURNS The Confessions of Owen Keane , the first Keane book since 1999's Orion Rising, is now available.

Seeking the pleasures and deceitful praise
Of nobles, while the Bard with greedy ears
Drinks in the voice divine of Africanus,
Caress'd and often, for his bloom of youth,
Whirl'd to Mount Alba; amidst all these joys,
He finds himself reduced to poverty.
Wherefore withdrawing from all eyes, and flying
To the extremest parts of Greece, he dies
At Stymphalus, a village lit Arcadia. When Terence, as he is commonly called in English speech, offered his first play, the Andrian The Eunuch
some verses from the Self-Tormentor To wipe off the aspersion of plagiarism, or perhaps to make himself a master of the customs and manners of the Grecians, in order to delineate them the better in his writings, Terence left Rome in the twenty-fifth year of his age, after having exhibited the six comedies which are still extant; and he never returned. Some ancient writers relate that he died at sea. He is said to have been of middle stature, genteel and of a swarthy complexion. He left a daughter, who was afterward married to a Roman knight; and, according to the best authorities, at the time of his death he was possessed of a house, together with six acres of land, on the Appian way.
