T ertullian was born during the latter half of the second century and raised in the cultured pagan environment of Carthage where he was well trained in rhetoric and possibly in law. He converted to Christianity as an adult and devoted himself thence to apologetic, polemical and moral writings, all of which display his characteristic brilliance and intolerance. He was the first major Christian thinker to write in Latin discourse. According to Jerome, he was a presbyter, but it is more likely that he was never more than a catechist or teacher. He became a Montanist and initially advocated it within the context of the church, but he eventually left the church when he became convinced that it would not recognize this New Prophecy, with its assertion of direct inspiration, its declaration of the end, and its puritanical and revivalist ethic. Thereafter he condemned the church as unspiritual and so as compromised by worldliness. Notes prepared by Kevin Dodd, PhD Sample Text CHAP. XX. Christ Born of a Virgin, of Her Substance. CHAP. XXI. THE WORD OF GOD DID NOT BECOME FLESH EXCEPT IN THE VIRGIN'S WOMB AND OF HER SUBSTANCE. THROUGH HIS MOTHER HE IS DESCENDED FROM HER GREAT ANCESTOR DAVID. HE IS DESCRIBED BOTH IN THE OLD AND IN THE NEW TESTAMENT AS "THE FRUIT OF DAVID'S LOINS."

The epideictic speech De Pallio by the Christian author Tertullian (about 200 A.D.) is considered as one of the most obscure texts ever written in Latin. As a logical sequel of my research on Apuleius , I have prepared a new edition with translation and literary commentary (in English) of Tertullian's text. It has been my main research project in the period 1998-2004. The book has been published March 2005.
De Pallio is one of the strangest and perhaps most difficult texts ever written in Latin. In this speech, presented before a live audience in Carthage around 200 A.D., Tertullian defends his radical choice to drop the Roman toga and take up the pallium of philosophers and christians. This theme may seem innocently simple, but it has been elaborated with impressive rhetorical pyrotechnics, couched in deliberately artificial language. And is this speech profoundly christian or shamefully pagan? A work of youth or of old age? Is it a serious apology or satire? Tertullian’s De Pallio has puzzled scholars for generations, yet it

Could you endure the Persecution of early Christians?
The place was the world's capital, Rome. The occasion was the great fire of 64 A.D., a fire set by the Emperor Nero himself. To divert suspicion from himself, Nero brought the charge of arson against the Christians. The charge seemed plausible, for the people were suspicious of Christians and imagined them guilty of many secret crimes. The accusation of arson, we are told by the pagan historian Tacitus (Annals 15,41), was unproved, but a "vast multitude" were convicted on a vaguer charge of "hatred of the human race". Tacitus continues , "And they were put to death with insults , either dressed in the skins of beasts, to perish by the worrying of dogs, or else put on crosses to be set on fire when daylight failed, for use as light by night. Nero had thrown open his gardens for that spectacle, and mingled with the people in jockey's dress, or driving a chariot." Here we see the sufferings of Christ repeated - the false charge, the hatred of the crowd, the mockery, and the cruel death. Another historian, Suetonius, tells us that among new laws enacted by Nero was one which inflicted punishment on the Christians, a people described as "given to a new and mischievous superstition" (Life of Nero 16, 2). In the period from Nero to Diocletian (64-313 A.D.), historians counted ten persecutions. To be a Christian was a crime which could launch a persecution at any unexpected moment. The ultimate aim was to destroy the Christian faith completely. But that effort was frustrated by the zeal of the Christians, and by their surprising readiness to suffer and die for their faith.

Tertullian (Quintus Septimus Florens Tertullianus), c.160-c.230, Roman theologian and Christian apologist, b. Carthage. He was the son of a centurion and was well educated, especially in law. Converted to Christianity c.197, he became the most formidable defender of the faith in his day. His Latin is vigorous and effective and reflects his juridical training. Sentences of his that have become proverbial are "The blood of martyrs is the seed of the church," and "It is certain because it is impossible" (often quoted incorrectly as "I believe it because it is impossible"). Some of Tertullian's opinions differed from the main stream of Christian thought, particularly his more rigorous view of sin and its forgiveness. After long defending the Montanists (see Montanism ), he left the church (213) to join them; he later established his own sect, known as Tertullianists. Tertullian's most important writings are Apologeticus, Ad Nationes

    Tertullian.
In April we concluded the series on the Greek Fathers ("Greek" because they wrote in Greek) with Saint Cyprian of Alexandria. We began with St. Ignatius of Antioch (April 2004), then covered St. Polycarp, St. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria Clement of Alexandria (Titus Flavius Clemens), d. c.215, Greek theologian. Born in Athens, he traveled widely and was converted to Christianity. He studied and taught at the catechetical school in Alexandria until the persecution of 202. Origen was his pupil there. He probably died in Caesarea, Cappadocia. , Origen, St. Gregory Nazianus, St. Basil, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Athanasius, and St. John Chrysostom Chrysostom: see John Chrysostom, Saint.
In this edition of May 2005 we start a shorter series (there were fewer of them) of the Church Fathers who wrote in Latin. In addition to Tertullian (below), Prof. Baldwin will cover Hilary of Poitiers Poitiers , city (1990 pop. 82,507), capital of Vienne dept., W central France, on the Clain River. In an age when Europe was divided between three popes, when pestilence claimed one in three lives and church offices were sold to the highest bidder, Hus defied earthly authorities to seek truth directly from the Word of God.
f he ever came to speak at your church you would probably never forget him. He was passionate, articulate, totally committed. He boldly taunted the might of the Roman empire, courageously defended oppressed believers, and harshly reprimanded compromising Christians. In later life, he lost favor with much of the Church when he at least temporarily took up with the Montanists what we would probably call today a puritanical-charismatic sect.
