42 views My friends and compeers and heroes at Librivox are celebrating their first birthday right now, and so I felt it necessary to add my kudos to their basic first-year achivements: cutting teeth on Conrad and Dostoevsky picking up the necessities of verbal communication with Wilde and Wodehouse and now, sleeping in Big Kids Bed and breaking themselves from thumbsucking thanks to Descartes and Machiavelli. Really, they do what I do here, only without so much swearing, and with a little more patience. Go wish them the best birthday to-date, as I do, from this humble squat of senescence. Homework Help: English: Authors: Mark Twain
by Emily Hall Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was a famous and popular American humorist, novelist, writer and lecturer. At his peak, he was probably the most popular American celebrity of his time.[citation needed] William Faulkner wrote that Twain was "the first truly American writer, and all of us since are his heirs." Clemens maintained that the name "Mark Twain" came from his years on the riverboat, where two fathoms (12 ft, approximately 3.7 m) or "safe water" was measured on the sounding line, was marked by calling "mark twain". But it is often thought that the name actually came from his wilder days in the West, where he would buy two drinks and tell the bartender to "mark twain" on his tab. The true origin is unknown. In addition to Mark Twain, Clemens used the pseudonym "Sieur Louis de Conte". (More under "Pen names," below.) Early life Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri, the third of four surviving children of John and Jane Clemens.

From all-creatures.org QUOTATIONS ARCHIVE This Quotations Archive contains words from famous and some not so famous people who have expressed a sense of love, compassion, and respect for all of God's creation: for people, for animals, and for the environment. They speak of our teaching methods and philosophy. They speak of a lifestyle of non-violence. They seek to eliminate cruelty and suffering. They seek to wake us up. They seek to give us hope. Mark Twain
(Samuel Clemens) "It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions. Heaven is by favor; if it were by merit your dog would go in and you would stay out. Of all the creatures ever made he (man) is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he is the only one...that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot." "If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat."

I did it, putting the article into the form of a parody on the "Burial of Sir John Moore"and a pretty crude parody it was, too. Then I lampooned two prominent citizens outrageouslynot because they had done anything to deserve, but merely because I thought it was my duty to make the paper lively. Next I gently touched up the newest strangerthe lion of the day, the gorgeous journeyman tailor from Quincy. He was a simpering coxcomb of the first water, and the "loudest" dressed man in the state. He was an inveterate woman-killer. Every week he wrote lushy "poetry" for the journal, about his newest conquest. His rhymes for my week were headed, "To MARY IN Hl," meaning to Mary in Hannibal, of course. But while setting up the piece I was suddenly riven from head to heel by what I regarded as a perfect thunderbolt of humor, and I compressed it into a snappy footnote at the bottomthus: "We will let this thing pass, just this once; but we wish Mr. J. Gordon Runnels to understand distinctly that we have a character to sustain, and from this time forth when he wants to commune with his friends in hl, he must select some other medium than the columns of this journal!" The paper came out, and I never knew any little thing attract so much attention as those playful trifles of mine.

Autobiography of Mark Twain Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) has been likened to Walt Whitman as one of the most quintessentially American writers this country has produced. While this book does not contain Mark Twain's complete autobiography, the stories do leave us with more of a flavor for the man and the legend. Dangerous Intimacy: Mark Twain's Final Years Dangerous Intimacy is the title of Karen Lystra's new biography about Mark Twain's final years. The title seems to suggest a torrid love affair and other romantic misadventures; and the book follows through with that assumption, though not in the way one would expect.
