Vaughan was born, and lived for most of his life, in the village of Llansanffraid, near Brecon, where he is buried. During the English Civil War, he was a Royalist sympathiser. He took his literary inspiration from his native environment, calling himself a "Silurist" in homage to the Silures, the Celtic tribe of south Wales which resisted the Roman invasion of Britain. Vaughan's greatest verse appears in the collection Silex scintillans, first published in 1650.
Henry Vaughan's poetry reflects his love of nature and mysticism and influenced the work of Wordsworth, among others. Much of Vaughan's poetry has a particularly modern sound. This is an example of an especially beautiful fragment of one of his poems entitled
The World:
I saw eternity the other night
Like a great ring of pure and endless light,
All calm as it was bright

Henry Vaughan
Henry Vaughan was born at Newton-upon-Usk in Brecknockshire, Wales, the twin brother of the celebrated alchemist Thomas Vaughan. Both he and his brother attended Jesus College, Oxford but Henry left without taking a degree to study Law in London. His studies were disrupted by the Civil War, however, and he returned to Wales to practise as a doctor. Vaughan published his first work, Poems, with the Tenth Satire of Juvenal Englished in 1646, followed by Olor Iscamus The Swan of Usk ) in 1651. His most memorable poetry is contained in his Silex Scintillans The Gleaming Flint ), a collection of meditative and religious poems which convey the depth of his faith and the sadness of lost innocence: "O how I long to travel back, And tread again that ancient track". His final work Thalia Rediviva , published in 1678, somewhat lacks his earlier sensitivity. He also produced a number of prose works on religious and medieval themes. Henry Vaughan was proud of his Welsh origins and liked to be known as the Silurist after the Silures, one of the ancient British tribes which formerly inhabited Brecknockshire. The Retreat

BE Vaughan graduated with a BE in electrical and electronic engineering in 1986. He remembers university as being "lots of hard work but lots of fun too". He also remembers his lecturer Professor Boyes, whose can-do attitude had a lasting effect on Vaughan. After graduation, Vaughan worked for Telecom for three years, before moving to Singapore, where he worked for Ericsson as an account manager. After 10 years in Singapore, Vaughan spent a year in Sweden, a couple of years in Taiwan, and then came back to NZ to work for Nokia for a couple of years. He then spent a short time in Sydney before heading back to Singapore where his family lives. When Vaughan isn't working he likes to spend his time taking part in triathlons and other related sports.

Vaughan's fame as a poet rests on his imaginative and often fresh and witty perceptions of almost worn-out religious images and subjects. His idealization of the past is balanced by his reverence for living nature. His poems are the reflections of a devout and joyous man. Vaughan became interested in medicine; in addition to writing and translating works on the subject, he practised as a doctor. William Wordsworth may have been influenced by Vaughan; both poets share a celebratory and awed view of nature.
