Detailed Biographies of Apollo I Crew - Gus Grissom
by Mary C. White
"If we die, we want people to accept it. We're in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life."
-Gus Grissom (John Barbour et al Footprints on the Moon (The Associated Press, 1969), p. 125.) Lieutenant Colonel Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom had been part of the U.S. manned space program since it began in 1959, having been selected as one of NASA's Original Seven Mercury Astronauts. His second space flight on Gemini III earned him the distinction of being the first man to fly in space twice. His hard work, drive, persistence and skills as a top notch test pilot and engineer had landed him the title of commander for the first Apollo flight. Yet for Grissom, Apollo I was to be just the beginning. He had been told privately that if all went well, he would be the first American to walk on the moon. Although Grissom already had stacked up a very impressive list of career accomplishments, being first on the moon would be the ultimate achievement for the man who grew up in a small town during the lean years of the Great Depression. Virgil Ivan Grissom was born on April 3, 1926 in Mitchell, Indiana, a tiny Midwestern community of about three thousand residents tucked away in the southern half of the state. Virgil was the eldest of Dennis and Cecile Grissom's four children, which included two brothers, Norman and Lowell and one sister, Wilma. Dennis Grissom managed to hold on to his job at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in spite of the numerous layoffs which were going on all around him. Although they were far from being wealthy, Mr. Grissom's twenty-four dollar per week salary allowed his family to live comfortably in their white frame house in town.

    About the Author
The greatest Roman poet, called by Tennyson "wielder of the stateliest measure ever moulded by the lips of man." Virgil is known for his epic, the Aeneid (written about 29 B.C.E., unfinished), which had taken its literary model from Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey . The tale depicts Aeneas's homeseeking and his war to found a city. The archetypical character has given much later model to Western heroes familiar from the books of Owen Wister and Louis L'Amour. "It is easy to go down into Hell; night and day, the gates of dark Death stand wide; but to climb back again, to retrace one's steps to the upper air - there's the rub, the task." (from Aeneid "Fortune assists the bold."

    Overview
Users browse their photos and related information while telling or composing stories of their personal life experiences, all the while maintaining an idea of time, place, and people. Stories consist of more than answers to the simple questions When? Where? and Who?, but that information provides a framework from which a rich narratives are created. Virgil is a photo browser that allows a user to browse his personal photo collection and related information while maintaining and exploiting the current context (time, location, and personal identity). The first time you run Virgil:
    • The progress bar at the bottom of the application will indicate how many photos have been processed and how many are remaining (hover the mouse over it for precise information). When complete you will see your photos automatically clustered by time. Time clusters are shown in a hierarchical tree view on the left, while corresponding thumbnails are shown on the right. Digital photos that were not created by a digital camera, or are from an old digital camera, do not have reliable timestamps. If no internal timestamp is found, Virgil will use the file system's last modified timestamp for the file. Some digital cameras also allow the time to be zero if the clock has not been set. Virgil will place any of these photos in a special time cluster labeled "No timestamps". A future update of Virgil will include functionality to generate valid timestamp properties.
